LOS ANGELES – It's a Saturday morning and a half-dozen adults are sitting in a high school classroom, staring at grim photos of sickly drug addicts and hearing about the deadly consequences of gang crime. They'd rather not be here, but a judge made them come.
The moms and dads were ordered to attend the class under a new California law giving judges the option of sending parents for training when their kids are convicted of gang crimes for the first time.
Assemblyman Tony Mendoza, the lawmaker behind the Parent Accountability Act, said it is the first state law to give judges the power to order parents of gang members to school, though other court-mandated classes exist at the local level.
"A lot of parents do not know how to handle teenagers," Mendoza said. "Now more than ever, parents need a guide."
The new law went into effect in January and eventually will be in place across California. Budget cuts in Sacramento meant implementation of the classes was delayed and only in the past month or so have they been rolled out on a limited basis in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

While the parents are in their training classes, little Johnny is out with his homies doing more crimes.
I hate to tell ya, but if you haven’t got them under control by the time they’re teenagers, I seriously doubt they can be helped without some extreme tough love.
I suppose that these classes are offered in various languages..another jobs program for the teachers unions and
bureaucrats.
Start deporting parents and deporting illegal kids and at least part of the problem would be solved.
What they need is to spend a few Sundays in church learning how to parent from God’s perspective.
The ACLU would explode if a judge ever sent parents to biblical counseling for youth classes.

Hmmm; I’m a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) volunteer - maybe we could start a CDPRT (Community Dumba$$ Parent Response Team) and do it for nothing.
I agree with the bueracrats, but I read the entire article and saw no mention of this beingtaught by Licensed professional teachers. Could you point that out to me in the article?
A lot of these punks will listen to their parents in my experience.

I’m sure the primary focus of the training will be positive reinforcement. Son the way you robbed that convenance store was excellent, in and out and you only had to shoot two people. I’m very proud son, keep up the good work, now give the money.

If by “parents” they mean “mothers and fathers,” I think this program could do some good. But I doubt dads are showing up in force.
Children need fathers, and gangbangers often don’t have them, so they find whatever fills that void in a gang.
Also, it wouldn’t hurt to secure the border and cut off the drug supply that is giving gangs business.

I guess a lot of them are violent punk ass thugs because their parents haven't gotten around to asking them to stop it.

I have a bunch of ‘thugs’ that I teach: one is addicted to snorting oxycontin, one just got shot through the hip and wrist playing with guns, several are up for expulsion, and none of them have any desire to live a decent self-managed life.

Most of these young thugs would probably be happy to off Madre y Padre if they lowered the boom too much.
