Sounds like something my Mother use to say: if you decide to enforce rules and become a parent when your kids are teens it is like shutting the door on the barn after the horses have escaped.

One of the prime pricliples we taught our kids was that if you can not be self-governed, ultimately somebody else will govern you. We spent a lot of time looking at the consequences of not being self-governed.
Oh, we home schooled for 12 years.
Have 2 great kids who are productive members of society (and very conservative, cool). I could tell you more but you would be bored.

My kid is going to public school, and it is a decent school.
The difference is she gets no leeway to miss work. She will be an AP student in 10 years, while all of the parents more interested in indulging themselves will have regular ed kids or drop outs.
