Pendleton Woolen Mills is making new Navajo-style blankets using wool and blended hair shed by an unusual herd of white buffalo in central Oregon.
Ranching experts say fewer than 50 white buffalo, or American bison, live in the U.S., The Oregonian reported.
On a sanctuary east of Bend, 11 of them roam acres of isolated juniper forest under the care of Cynthia Hart-Button and her husband, Charles Button. It's one of the larger collections of white buffalos.
Buffalo usually are black or brown. White buffalo are produced when recessive genes trigger the unusual trait. They are not albino.
Some Native American tribes consider them sacred.
"The significance of the white buffalo has been recognized by all the tribes that are buffalo culture people," Jim Stone, a Yankton-Yanktonai Sioux, told The Oregonian. Stone is executive director of the Intertribal Buffalo Council in Rapid City, S.D., an organization created to restore buffalo to Indian nations.
The white buffalo's presence is a prophesy of spiritual rebirth - "an indicator of better times coming to tribal people," Stone said. "Historically, that has been the view."
The first of the Oregon herd was born in Flagstaff, Ariz., in 1997 into a small herd of black bison owned by Dena Riley and her husband, Jim. Hart-Button worked with the couple for a decade in Flagstaff.
Being in a single, small herd with the right genetic traits stacked the odds in favor of the unlikely white buffalo births, she said. "It's like winning a lottery ticket 11 times."
Hart-Button brought the herd to Oregon five years ago after Jim Riley died and a grieving Dena Riley decided to take a break from raising the buffalo.

Does this mean that Wovoka’s prophecy is about to come true?
I’ll be in the back yard brushing up on my Ghost Dance.
Holder & Justice Dept sue over racial buffalo bias
Not a mutation it is a recessive gene....both parents have to carry the gene for it to manifest..
They look tasty. :)
It looks beige and not white, or its not taken in good light..
Fail, idiot sloganeer
I’d say that’s white. Dirty white, but it’s white.
How wonderful to find such beautiful animals!
I read once that bison can bread very closely genetically without
The problems that most animals have.
“The white buffalo’s presence is a prophesy of spiritual rebirth - “an indicator of better times coming to tribal people,” Stone said. “Historically, that has been the view.”
So. Will we all be enjoying better times? Or will the Natives being dancing on the bones of the white man? The way things are going, I see the second scenario.
Or, maybe we can all just enjoy Pendleton blankets with white buffalo wool in them.
Be careful, the last people that tried that were massacred by the American Army and they thought they were safe right there in their own back yard.
I STOPPED SUPPORTING OUR PENDELTON MADE IN AMERICA COMPANY WHEN I FOUND OUT THEY OUT SOURCE TO MEXICO FOR LABOR.
PENDELTON SALES A STUFFED WHITE BUFFULO (SIC) FOR AROUND A HUNDRED BUCKS.
I’D SAY THE COLOR LOOKS LIKE CREAMY.
BUT WHO KNOWS IT IS DRY IN EASTERN OREGON SO THEY MIGHT JUST BE DUST COVERED BUT COMPARED TO BROWN I GUESS IN THE LIVESTOCK WORLD IT WOULD BE CONSIDERED WHITE.
MERRY CHRISTMAS DIXIECHICK!
Heh - now that I think about it a bit more, I would say that Buffalo’s color is more like..
WHITE MAN SPEND PAYCHECK AT OUR CASINO AND IF WE EMPLOY THEM THEY WORK FOR LOW WAGES.
THERE IS TRUTH IN THAT PROPHACY.
HMMM COULD HAVE A NEW PAINT COLOR THERE.
WHITE BUFF BUFFOLO.
MAKES THE WALLS ALWAYS APPEAR DIRTY/DUSTY WHITE.
GREAT FOR HOMES HERE IN THE PNW THAT HAVE DOGS COME IN AND SHAKE OF THE RAIN.
SHAKE OF THE RAIN
Yes - we’ve been having that of late!
ACK. OFF OFF OFF. GOOD CATCH SOUND LIKE A NAME OF AN ALTERNATIVE SEATTLE MUSIC GROUP.
AND YES WE ARE DROWNING HERE AT THE COAST.
BUT KNOCK ON WOOD THE TEMPERATURE IS MILD NO ICE MEANS WE GET TO TRAVEL AROUND.
NO CABIN FEVER.
THE HIGH WINDS HAVE KNOCKED TREES DOWN ON HOMES AND I AM SO GLAD WE TOOK OUT ALL THE SPRUCES AROUND THE HOUSE LAST SUMMER.
PLEASE...turn off the caps lock.....
I know the article is not talking about albinos but we have an albino squirrel in our neighborhood and they are rare.
The difference in albino and white squirrels is:
“Albino squirrels have a white fur coat, but, have pink or blue eyes, due to a genetic condition called albinism. This is a rare condition, when compared to white squirrels. So, the basic difference between white and albino squirrels lies in the eye color. While albino squirrels have pink or blue eyes, white ones have dark-colored eyes. In case of albino squirrels, the absence of melanin in the eyes affect their vision and impaired vision results in falls and injuries, that leads to loss of life. This makes it very rare to find a true albino squirrel”.
I have been close enough to him to see the pink eyes but I’m trying to get him on camera. When/if that happens, I’ll post a picture. As the above states - If he lives that long..
This just in: The Federal Government has announced plans to begin busing some of the buffalo to predominantly black herds.
It’s racest wait until the NAACB hear about this.
A buff buffalo.
Send in the Nuge. Uncle Ted will thin the herd.
Is that wheat or rye?
There is a colony of white squirrels in a Western NC town. Think it’s Brevard.
I know a woman that has ‘pinto’ pattern and white deer in her neighborhood.
Talking to some hunters, they consider them animals with poor genes and want them exterminated.
I think they are beautiful.
YOUR IN ALL CAPS POSTS ARE PAINFUL TO READ...
PLEASE LOCATE CAPS LOCK AND SHIFT KEY, UNLESS YOU ARE IN A TELNET WORLD...
Also, their blankets are, I believe, made in the US.
Where are you finding wool shirts that are made completely in the USA?
“I talk like a baby and I never pay for drinks...B-L-O-N-D...Don’t you wish you were me!”
Breaded, sauteed, marinated. All sounds good.
There is a White Buff about four miles from where I sit. it is 8 or 9 years old and was visited by the Sioux when it was born. White Buffs are not all that rare and do not IMHO signal the end of the world.
I think you might be right, the dust they roll in and the wind driven dirt can make a difference...
Albinism is a death sentence for critters in snowy or alpine regions. Their first winter out of the den/nest without their protective eye pigment they are blinded by the glare. Albinism is only a survival advantage if you’re a tiger working for Sigfried and Roy.
Thanks!! I was hoping for a photo.
God’s most perfect creature IMHO. Mind their own business, unless you mess with them. Don’t have to kill to survive.
Don’t mind whatever weather God throws at them.
There were millions here, ‘til we decided that they needed to be eliminated.
In other words the Indians are going to build another casino.
SO PAINFUL THAT IT BLINDED YOU FROM READING MY TAGLINE?
ANOTHER POSTER WHO CAN’T BE BOTHERED WITH READING TAG LINES.
Tastes like Spotted Owl, I bet.
