When is twins too many?

Like so many other couples these days, the Toronto-area business executive and her husband put off having children for years as they built successful careers. Both parents were in their 40s — and their first son just over a year old — when this spring the woman became pregnant a second time. Seven weeks in, an ultrasound revealed the Burlington, Ont., resident was carrying twins. “It came as a complete shock,” said the mother, who asked not to be named. “We’re both career people. If we were going to have three children two years apart, someone else was going to be raising our kids. ... All of a sudden our lives as we know them and as we like to lead them, are not going to happen.”

She soon discovered another option: Doctors could “reduce” the pregnancy from twins to a singleton through a little-known procedure that eliminates selected fetuses — and has become increasingly common in the past two decades amid a boom in the number of multiple pregnancies.

Selective reductions are typically carried out for women pregnant with triplets or greater, where the risk of harm or death climbs sharply with each additional fetus. The Ontario couple is part of what some experts say is a growing demand for reducing twins to one, fuelled more by socio-economic imperatives than medical need, and raising vexing new ethical questions.

Experts question whether parents should choose to terminate a fetus just because of the impact the child would have on their lives, and note that even more medically necessary reductions can trigger lifelong angst and even threaten marriages.

The mother said the Toronto doctor who eventually did her reduction performs several a month.

Same thing happened to me as well with our second son. I was so happy to still be pregnant with one as well. Every once in awhile I think about the one we lost and wonder what he or she would have been like. We always wanted three or four kids - I guess this was God’s way of telling us it was going to be three.

"As a woman who struggled with infertility for 11 years and then was blessed to adopt two beautiful daughters, this woman literally makes me want to vomit!"

We lost 5 babies to miscarriage before we were blessed with our two sons. During those heartbreaking years, it was especially difficult to see 'mothers' aborting, abandoning or neglecting their children. Our sons are teenagers now, and increasingly independent. They are a source of great pride and joy.

The years of caring for wee ones fly by quickly. I wonder how many of these parents who choose 'reduction' will have a different perspective once their surviving children are older and the daily burdens of care are lighter. They will have denied their children, themselves and their entire families the joy of knowing these missing family members. It's a terrible loss.

These people are #ing Nazi savages!

Thankfully one survived to haunt those bastards for the rest of their obscene lives.

At what age do they tell the surviving child the twin was killed off for convenience.

Oh Dear God, help us.

My twin brother didn’t survive long after birth. No one ever said a word about it to me because it upset my Mom so - until about the time when I was in 8th grade when I mentioned I dreamed about this boy all the time. The look on my Dad’s face told me something, he asked me a few questions about my dreams and then told me the story. Do you know he grew up in my dreams as I grew up. I can tell you exactly what he looks like. I wonder if the twin they keep will always miss his brother/sister?

These selfish pigs should just kill all three. They’re not fit to be raising children. What they need is a puppy.

As callous, cold, and calculating as such as these are, I wouldn't entrust them with a puppy, either...

It’s sad, but selective abortion has been going on for a very long time. I hope that there will come a time when docs won’t recommend it.

I had twin girls when my older daughter was several years old. My twins together weighed 8lbs and one had to stay in the hospital for a month.

Your comments ring true with my (our) Mom.

My brother and I presented our family with children # 4 & 5. Three older sisters super excited about their new brothers. That was 65+ years ago.

Don and I were under-weight, I came home first and Don 3 weeks later.

Over the years, I always had more body weight but now we seem to balance the scales.

Nowadays, don't believe a word Don says when he claims to be the better looking one... it's always been me. 8^)

>>There is no word for this kind of evil.<<

I see no difference between this despicable POS and a Mohammedan “mother” who sends her child off to blow himself up. Neither has any concept of what it means to be human.

“Hey, hey, whatcha say;
How many babies you kill today?”

These successful professionals are actually godless robotic morons. Just from a purely selfish point of view (forget the fetus) they are setting themselves up for a lifetime of regret, recrimination and retribution. You don’t kill this gift from God...especially at age 40. I can see a poor stupid 16 year old or 20 year old being somewhat forgiven for doing this but not at age 40. Talk about accumulating sin and bad karma.

They seem to have enough money so what’s the problem? Must be the wife’s doing. She could handle the phony corporate world but can’t handle three real live living babies

"I can see a poor stupid 16 year old or 20 year old being somewhat forgiven for doing this but not at age 40."

I too can see the decision process being different at these ages. The 16 or 20 year old might well feel overwhelmed by the logistical and financial responsibilities. At 40, personal comfort and established lifestyle probably play a bigger role. A loving extended family and community could go a long way toward helping a young parent or couple cope with these challenges. The older parents may be tougher to dissuade from this path, being more set in their ways and steeped in this self-absorbed culture.

These people repulse me to the very core!

“Were career people” You know what, why did you even have children in the first place?

Pigs like this should not have children, ever. Selfish pigs!

I am so angry I could vomit!

How could they be so cold blooded? Just what are they going to say to the other twin. “your sibling was inconvenient to us”. May both of the parents rot in the furnace for being so heinous!

God help us, really!

We live in a society that has humanized animals and dehumanized people. The world is indeed upside down.

After seeing the special and unfathomable bond my twins have, I find this idea absolutely and utterly repulsive, even beyond the typical murdering children for personal convenience angle. Because in this case, the survivor’s life is lessened too.
