Ruby's parents raised £170,000 for lifesaving cancer treatment in America - then learnt the NHS could have treated her all along. Shockingly, it's a story being repeated across Britain...
To see Ruby Owen smiling in her parents’ loving embrace, you would never guess the gruelling sacrifices her family made to save the chubby three-year-old from a brain tumour that the NHS had given up trying to treat. Her father, Martin, had to abandon his thriving fire-alarm business to raise nearly £170,000 to take Ruby to the U.S. for specialist radiotherapy this summer. The family did everything from shaking tins outside football grounds to having sponsored chest waxes.
The Owens then uprooted from their home in the Midlands to spend three months in Indiana while Ruby received proton-therapy to destroy the tumour threatening her life.

Last year, Ruby’s British doctors had told the family there was nothing more they could do for her. The good news is that since receiving the U.S. treatment, Ruby’s latest scan shows she is clear of cancer.
Ruby is just one of a number of cancer-stricken children who have been effectively abandoned by the NHS, leaving their parents to strive against the odds to raise huge sums to fund life-saving specialist care abroad.

Everyone who comes into this country from another country with socialized medicine should be required to sign a release of information so statistics can be verified.

A big part ofthis debate is that the US was the safety valve for particularly Canadian but in this case UK government health care. But Obama and the Dims want to step in and fix that.
They were lucky to get this treatment before Obamacare, (and perhaps Romneycare), kicks in.
It's the difference between an animal living in the wild that has to depend on itself, or an animal in a zoo that is fed and watered but can be neutered or euthanized at will.
Not to worry: if all else fails there are always Indian reservations.

The Brits voted for this mess, over and over again. If you put the government in charge, this is what you are predictably going to get. Socialized medicine will deliver substandard care to the vast majority, but the small minority that requires extreme care will just be left to die.

Yes, cutting-edge, “expensive” treatments will be rationed if not eliminated. But the other effect that I think the public is missing is that medicine will stagnate. You won’t see advancements in care.
Years ago, I read the history of pediatric cardiac congenital defect repairs. In the 1920s & 1930s, these kids were dying in the OR. Now, the holes in their heart are being repaired on an outpatient basis. In my last ICU job, I worked in a Transplant ICU where our small bowel recipients had a marginal survival rate. 6 years later, those patients are leading relatively normal lives & their rejection/complication rate has been halved! We have to remember that the more we do something, the better we get at doing it. If cancer patients (for example) aren’t receiving care, how does the dumbass pulic ever think there will be a cure? DUH!!!
I can’t stand all the ding dongs I meet who think we have a “right” to “free health care”. WAKE UP, DUMMIES!!! (not you FReepers, of course....I mean all the tools staring at MTV who run out & vote without a clue).
There is no reason whatsoever why a state run system would insure an (expense). Now if you were in your 30's (reciept generating) and paying into the system with payroll tax, income tax, and not collecting social security, then you get treatment. They have not been too shy of showing us the age versus cost curve on healthcare.

I’m a nurse anesthetist. Many drs & nurses I know are conservatives. It’s my hope that we can all band together & start a private health system similar to ones found in countries like Australia. It would be tough & I don’t know how we would make it work, BUT that’s my hope. Single payer would be a disaster for everyone, not just professionally, but as potential consumers of care as well. We have a moral obligation, IMO, to try every means possible to circumvent the public option.
Actually the move in Europe for elective surgery has been towards India itself. Remember the little mini-panic about the superbug a couple of people came back with? India could well develop quite a trade in surgery tourism, if they match USA standards of care.
I have heard that Costa Rica has gained some dental trade this way. I could see lots of US MDs setting up in places like Costa Rica for the future US medical tourist trade.
Actually I was referring to “native American” reservations, which are a bit closer to home. If they can run gambling enterprises, why not medical facilities?
