“It is required. The Hajj (pilgrimage) is one of the five pillars of the islamic faith and anyone who can afford to do it is expected to do it.”

Actually, I don’t think this is necessarily a religious obligation during the school year. It is only required ONCE in a person’s life It can be delayed to another time. It also depends on the school system’s/state’s required student-pupil time.

“...just the same as it would be to allow a Catholic teacher to take unpaid time off to visit the Holy Land and to perform the stations of the Cross.”

This is NOT a religious obligation.

Anyone wonder if the pilgrimage will include a week or two at a terrorist training camp? Wonder if Zero and Holder will approve that? TSA pat down when they return?

Allowing the teacher to take *unpaid* time off to complete a religious obligation is a reasonable accomadation - just the same as it would be to allow a Catholic teacher to take unpaid time off to visit the Holy Land and to perform the stations of the Cross.

The question is: would the school district have granted unpaid time off to the Catholic teacher? If not, then they aren't discriminating.

Employers (public and private) are required to make "reasonable accommodation". If someone takes a job that plainly requires they are expected to work the 180 days of the school year, then they must do so unless a personal or family emergency makes it impossible.

Some school districts give teachers a handful of "personal" days each school year that can be used at the teacher's discretion. But at least in my local school district, the teacher is required to find a substitute teacher for planned absences.

Other than those personal days, teachers are limited to the same holiday/vacation periods as students: summer, spring break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. They can't take lengthy vacations in the middle of a school year outside those planned holidays.

Well our affirmative action, head of the DOJ, Holder told us all that we were cowards when it came to race so to prove Holder wrong; No time off for some 7th century monkey boy religious excursions. It is not a religion it is a hate cult.

If this is approved then what is next time off for a KKK meeting because there is zero difference between the two hate cults other than number of members.

Holder would want her to stop at a mosque at ground zero to collect her intel first of course.

I don’t understand why she or he did not go to Mecca during college years. That is normally when they go. Something is stinky with this. Plus at least they are asking for unpaid....that is what surprised me.

While I am not a fan of islam, the DOJ is right on this one.

No, the Justice Department is totally wrong on this one. The Haj is required (if possible) only once in a Muslim's lifetime. That is no requirement that this teacher go this particular year, and since the Muslims follow the lunar calendar, the Haj will fall in summer eventually so that teachers could go during their vacation.

These things should be worked out between a teacher and the school, with no JD involvement.

I say good riddance and here’s hoping that you don’t get trampled by the throwbacks. Who wants their kid to be brainwashed by a muslim anyway.

Note: I am just being fair about this, okay?

No.

This idiot teacher can go any time she wants to on this pilgrimage to worship it's moon-god idol. It is not necessary that the trip be made now. As a teacher she onlt has to work 180 days a year anyway. Demanding more time off is just stupid, and typical of the left, which seems to believe that everyone owes them a living.

We all make choices in life that have long term consequences. My husband is a teacher and were he able to start over he would choose a different career. While there are summer breaks (he works in construction) there is NO flexibility during the school year. None. He gets 2 personal days per year, but the administration has to approve the reason for his taking personal days, it isn’t just a “day off.” Doesn’t matter if what is going on (elderly parents needing help, kids’ activities, mission trips, etc.)he absolutely must be at school.

If her religion requires her to take a long trip over a very specific time during the school year, she should have chosen a career that allows for that.

Choices have consequences.

IIRC, the “Haj” is to be performed at least once in one’s lifetime. It does not need to be done at a certain time of the year. As such, why doesn’t this dolt just do it over a summer vacation, when it wouldn’t cause staffing problems at the school.

This is a ginned up controversy.

“They can’t take lengthy vacations in the middle of the school year...”

You are absolutely correct. A substitute teacher for a MONTH would disrupt any sort of education process. This teacher has the summer months to do what she likes. If a visit to Mecca is required Once In a Lifetime... you can wait till she retires or do it over the summer. Just a thought.

The Church didn’t cooperate in the Spanish Inquisition, it merely observed.

And while brutal, it was the only way the Spanish Kingdoms could root the Muslims out. Muslims have no use for dhimmi legal systems.
