Oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens' TV commercials blasted the airwaves in 2008 with his big idea to get America off foreign oil imports: natural gas and wind energy.
Two years later, let’s just make that natural gas.
Since the billionaire’s plans for the world’s largest wind farm fell apart in the Texas Panhandle, Pickens has edited his much-hyped “Pickens Plan” to focus primarily on his other big business interest: natural gas.
Touting 1.7 million Pickens Plan supporters, he’s now pushing Congress to pass legislation that would offer incentives to convert 18-wheelers and fleet vehicles to run on compressed natural gas, or CNG, rather than diesel. He said if just 8 million of those trucks switch to the domestic-produced fuel, it could cut in half the amount of foreign oil imported by the United States.

T Boone sure knows how to shake that gubmint money subsidy tree.
Just yesterday flying from DFW to Midland, Tx. sure was a bunch of tall white fans down thar on the scraggly plains of Texas. Immediately I thought of T Boondoggle Pickens rotational monuments to his grabbings.
Interesting.
Machine Design magazine has run a series of articles questioning if there is ANY net electrical output from wind farms.
Seems that all the folks being trained to work in the new green economy are unable to find jobs.
Pickens was a blow hard [pun intended].....to promote maybe a billion or more for wind schemes that virtually every European country had already abandoned as too expensive, too unreliable and too anti-environment.
I’m sure he came out OK with a bunch of Taxpayer and investor money in his pocket. SOB shyster.
The natural gas idea actually makes a little sense. But if it will make my heating bill go up, I don’t like it.
Maybe natural gas can. I don't know enough about the automotive fuel business, and specifically enough about the engineering problems, to have an opinion. But, the wind portion of his plan seemed fanciful, at best.
Belief in wind energy as the solution to anything is little different than belief in Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy.
Always watch the OTHER hand. While Pickens is touting green energy with one hand......and he may well get the gubmint to pony up the money to actually make his CNG plan a reality and make him even richer than he is; he has bought up large acreage in several southwest states which are sitting over humongous underground aquifers. His “other” plan is to get even richer selling water when the time is right..........at a much higher price per unit of measure than CNG costs.
By the way, GHW Bush and GW Bush have bought a large acreage in Paraguay, which ALSO sits over a gi-normous aquifer. They have the same plan as Pickens. Actually I think the Bushes and Pickenses are old oilfield buds, but they apparently feel there is more money to be made in water. I know ONE THING for sure; if you spill some water while in the process of pumping or transporting it, there is not a lot of clean-up required!
As I recall, this scam artist demanded to be given right of way for his windmills, which gave him control of a whole lot of water rights, which he then planned to sell to farmers.
If he is now saying that he has decided not to build the windmills on the right of way, does he have to give back the water rights?
Somehow, I doubt it. He is nothing but a crook.
I always figured the only wind involved was the hot air emanating from t.boone’s posterior.
Windpower sucks (pun intended) but NG rules for one very important reason: The US is completely self sufficient and would not require any foreign (i.e Middle east) imports.
Yo Pickens ... lets try good ol Supply and Demand without Guberment ideas.

Washington,D.C. is all the wind farm you’ll ever need. If they could ever harness all that, it would be good-bye, King Abdullah, take a one-way camel ride into the desert.
