DeMint Drops Bid to Delay Action on New START (selling America OUT)
National Journal ^ | December 15, 2010 | By Megan Scully and Rebecca Kaplan

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., backed off threats today to force a reading of the New START arms-reduction treaty after the White House assailed the delay tactic as a “new low.”

Senate leaders had estimated that a full reading of the accord could take 15 hours, which would have thrown a wrench into ambitious plans to finish work on New START, an omnibus spending bill, and several other pieces of legislation before the Senate adjourns for the year.

I'm with you! Sen DeMint has been one of the few voices we can count on. Lets get some facts before we flip out.

Yeah, I'm sure Palin would go on Fox and trash Jim DeMint. It's amazing here how quickly people dump on everyone (except Sarah Palin, of course). One minute DeMint is our hero, the next he's a lousy RINO, CINO, selling us out, etc.

I left the GOP after the Nevada primary when the asshat RINOs came out of the woodwork and pulled their collective pants down and bent over for Reid.

So you think its good to wipe out half our nuclear subs while China is building nuclear subs? What about not retaliating with nuclear weapons after we have been hit by a biological and/or chemical attack?

This is coming from a Senate that is worried that the next Senate will not pass it. The fact that it’s being rammed down should give you great concern.

DeMint is a disgrace. Always giving up. Just keep delaying everything, using every known and yet undiscovered loophole and procedure!!!!

“Man, you guys fold like cheap suits. Have a little faith. Sen. DeMint has always been a solid conservative and he has been a big supporter of new conservatives getting elected. He has taken on incumbent rino’s in the primaries. This treaty hasn’t been passed yet, maybe he stopped the reading because he’s got the votes to stop it.”

No ... I have the time that she served as Governor and her decisions and actions during that period to go by.

I spent all day on the phone calling DC. Did you? I spoke to many Senate offices and I spoke with DeMint's people... they registered my statement and refused to discuss anything beyond DeMint “standing strong”. I did not bash him... I pointed out that it appears that he caved and that Sarah has never caved... and she had ample opportunity in Alaska to do so... taking the easy route... but she never did.

If DeMint did bail out... and it appears at this point that he did... he has done himself tremendous damage. Some of us have ZERO tolerance for any further political bullsh!t. That is it... bottom line... no negotiation.

SHUT IT DOWN, DeMint. It is unconscionable that Congress presses on in the face of a clear message from the electorate. Many of those casting votes are no longer answerable to the people; they have already been fired.

The one glimmer of hope is that you have a fallback plan and this is just tactical.

And this is another sign that the Senate is not the place from which to run for President.

"Senator DeMint opposes ramming the controversial START Treaty in the lame duck session," Denton said. "After Senator DeMint asked for the entire treaty to be read aloud to slow down the process, Senator Reid relented and agreed to delay the debate until tomorrow."

I don't think Demint caved at all. I watched part of this unfold on C-Span and thought at the time that Demint dropped his plan to call for a full reading, and in exchange Reid agree to hold no more roll call votes today, and to take up START again tomorrow and allow more reasonable debate time.

I think the changes in the Senate schedule for this afternoon and tomorrow more or less stretched out any vote on START about the same amount of time a full reading would have.

And I think Demint also had plans to call for a full reading of the 2,000 page omnibus spending bill. We still have that one to watch.

...none of the FReepers on this thread know all the facts involved, yet they are blasting DeMint as though he were an enemy of the Republic.

Perhaps we are reacting in haste, but DeMint could have still demanded a full reading of the bill to fill up the time required for the treason lobby to get the rest of their horrid agenda passed.

Reading the START bill would have eaten up 15 hours of precious time, which would have helped to forestall the damage these Democrats intend to do to us.

I'm sorry, but I think he should have stood firm, even if he's got the votes to defeat this. Giving concessions to the enemy is bad business.

He dropped the reading after Ried delayed the vote the same amount of time it would have taken to read it.....this is lies from your friendly lying MSM spinning the story against the truth.

Why do they have to ram it through. That ALONE should clue you that it’s a bad deal.

What I’m hearing about wait until we hear what DeMint says. I remember hearing the same people on Free Republic say that about Bush and Karl Rove on some liberal bills and the Dubai Ports deal. Just wait.. Just wait... Yeah right!

Treaties need 67 senators for ratification...

I wish that were true, but the Constitution says only two thirds of those present, could be only three members need be present and voting.

I’ll bet most of us are on demint’s email list. If demint caves, it’s no better than any other rino sucking up. I

If you are not for the constitution, if you vote against it, you are the enemy. If demint caves, he’s no better than Pelosi or Reid. The bottom line is upholding the constitution. If demint agrees with the dark side, then he is in the enemy camp. I really don’t care anymore.

I will not hold any allegiance to any person. I’m hoping demint won’t cave, is this a propaganda campaign against him?

The fact that they are RAMING IT THROUGH should be a clue enough that something is wrong with it.

It’s like a used car dealership trying to say “you have to buy it now you have to buy it now” B.S.

Why does it have to be done before the new Senators come in. Common you know what’s going on here. Any time someone tries to rush something then you KNOW it’s bad.
