Lame Duck on Steroids
The Washington Times ^ | December 16, 2010 | Editorial

When the 20th Amendment was ratified in 1933, it was hailed as a means of doing away with the excesses of lame-duck sessions and making Congress more responsible to voters. Its authors hadn't counted on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid....

One of the first orders of business in the new Congress should be to introduce an amendment to further compress the time between holding elections and implementing their results. The outgoing leadership's last, desperate rush to force through unpopular measures - after voters repudiated them at the ballot box - is symptomatic of the institutional corruption of this Congress. Democrats are cynically gaming the system to reduce accountability and favor special interests, especially their own.

In the meantime, Republicans would do well to look into late Democratic Sen. William Proxmire's successful two-week filibuster against funding increases for the Supersonic Transport (SST) program during the extended 1971 session. Sometimes you have to go to the mattresses.

Pulling 2000 page bills out of thin air, anticipating everyone to acquiesce.

Proxmire may have had his quirks, but he also had balls. Something that is in short supply in this Congress.

Gosh, funding the SST is such an innocent thing by comparison to this rape that is going on now. Even in today’s dollars it probably wouldn’t even make round off in this spending spree.

What part of “YOU’RE FIRED” do they not understand? They ought to be packing their bags, calling moving companies and cleaning out their desks!

I hate to say this, but the pubbies don't seem to be up to the caliber of the late Sen. Proxmire. I want to see anger in their flashing eyes, and stand up and stop these little RAT PIGGIES at the pork trough.

The puppies that are in there now, simply are the OLD SCHOOL pubbies, and DON'T CARE. You saw how many of them still wanted the EARMARKS.

They won't stop the DEMwits, as this is their last chance to get all the EARMARKS they want and blame it on the DEMS., yet the damage is done. THEY DON'T CARE, they got their windfalls.

They think you and I will forget about this in 2 years, as other things will be looming on the horizon for us to face.

They may want to make it as difficult as they can for the new R's coming in to ever be able to repeal any of this mess. When they try, O will simply have another emergency that needs to be tackled.

The O's always have an emergency going on.

I fully expect the Dems to sneak a provision into some unread bill that alters the calendar, such that Jan 1, 2011 is postponed indefinitely.

It’s simple - in an election year, Congress adjourns before the election and doesn’t convene again again until after the new year.

And, when they re-convene, they follow strict protocol - one bill, one topic AND a direct relationship to a Congressional responsibility in the Constitution!!

(I’m REALLY sick of these self-serving, elitest jerks!! A couple of years without them in session would do wonders for America!!

It is their affinity for 2000 page bills to BURY the US in utter stupidity. It will take years to figure out the minutiae hidden in Pelosi/Reid’s bills. Other than the pure pork which we know of, the destruction they are wreaking will come gradually but ever so effectively. These two are the most anti-Americans that ever supposedly “served” the public.

Good for you and others who will do the same, so will I.

I will never forget. I thought I had at one time two of the most conservative Senators, Coburn and Inhofe, but here lately they are begining to irratate me.

Especially INHOFE and his love of EARMARKS, I will never forget that one.
