Edible Fracking Chemicals

-- snip --

The Wall Street Journal however reports good news today in its story, "Edible Ingredients Used to Drill for Gas." Apparently Halliburton and Baker Hughes have developed fracking chemicals using fatty acids and other ingredients found in toothpaste, ketchup, ice cream and beer. The enemies of cheap natural gas of course won't congratulate Halliburton for being a good steward of the planet and switch their position. I wonder where the next attack will come from. Fatty acids in the edible fracking chemicals lead to an obesity epidemic in the caribou population?

>>Apparently Halliburton and Baker Hughes have developed fracking chemicals using fatty acids and other ingredients found in toothpaste, ketchup, ice cream and beer. <<

Don’t panic; CarboxyMethylCellulose (CMC) has been used for almost a century as drilling mud in oil fields, as well as a binding agent in toothpaste, ketchup and ice cream. It’s also used to stabilize beer, allowing it to be shipped without going flat.

ChemE’s study all about CMC, since it is a non-Newtonian fluid and can only be pumped with a Moyno. Amazing what the mind retains for so long.

Nothing that rational. Just that fuel produced in this way would make drivers obese.

This is ridiculous. Using food based products as fracking fluids is no different than converting our food into ethanol. It will lead to higher food costs and higher fuel costs. Get the tree huggers out of the oil industry’s hair.

Well service companies also use sand and (rarely) walnut shells to prop the rock formations open. Last time I checked, both were environmentally friendly.

In limestone formations, they use HCl, which is found naturally in our stomach's.

The biggest environmental threat lies in their extensive use of dihydrogen monoxide. This stuff is highly corrosive, can kill if inhaled in even small quantities, is a key component of global warming and acid rain, plays a major role in the formation of cancers, and is used to activate most harmful bacterial agents.

You are comparing a thimble to several tanker trucks. The volume of these additives are very small and much gets recovered.

C'mon, don't introduce facts - it's gospel that fracking will turn our groundwater into Jersey-grade toxic ooze.

You can't counter articles of liberal faith with facts, after all.

Just because we’ve been doing this for 60 years and 9 out of 10 onshore oil or gas wells require fracture stimulation to remain productive...

This is still a new experimental procedure and we need to pass laws against it.

And don’t forget, we also need more OPEC imports.

Actually, I don't really like that Haliburton graphic I used above. While correct for the percentages of mixture, most of the Fluid System is 7.5% dilute Hydrochloric acid. Consequently, most of the Fluid System is water as well.

This one is better for the layman, but you have to click the picture to see the clear pdf.

I wonder if this has come too late for NY as Gov. Patterson (not really a bad guy given he is a dem) issued a ban on this type of drilling. It is unlikely the new communist my fellow New Yorkers elected, Mafia Man Cuomo, will lift the ban on drilling even if the chemicals were holy water.

Boy did they sucker-punch the Enviros on this one!

Of course it will open a whole new line of attack against McDonalds, Proctor and Gamble, and Coors...
