WASHINGTON (AP) — Opponents of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law are a cheering a federal court ruling that one of its core provisions is unconstitutional. They may not realize that Obama has a fallback option that also could do the job.
Even if the Supreme Court ultimately agrees that government cannot require individuals to carry health coverage, the Obama administration could borrow a strategy that Medicare has used for decades to compel consumers to join new insurance groups.
Medicare’s coverage for doctor visits is voluntary and carries a separate premium, yet more than nine in 10 older people sign up. The reason is simple: Those who opt out when they first become eligible face a lifelong penalty that escalates the longer they wait.

More ways the government can “help” you.
The American people want the healthcare bill gone and Obama gone.
Right, pretend it’s voluntary - just like the income tax.
Congress also likes to pretend there’s no deficit.
And they like to pretend that 83% of Americans don’t hate their guts.
Notice the voluntary part?
I'm in the minority again. Last week I had the opportunity to visit a physician in his office. After a couple of x-rays and a conversation that lasted almost an hour, I left and paid the $200 fee on my way out.
Some might observe that the bill was much more than a co-payment, but I didn't. You see, that was my first visit to a doctor in about 10 years. It works out to about $20 a year or a little more than $1.66 a month.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I received a 15% discount for prompt payment.
Obamacare was a major leap forward- but they are NOT finished until all the insurance companies go out of business.
They need to beat the private companies to death and cause people to choose the govt
Same with the auto industry- they did not need to take over ALL the companies just one. Then use tax dollars to price the competition out of business
Just get rid of the friggin law and we all won’t have to play all these cat and mouse games.
Had we paid health premiums over the years we would not have the business we have today.
Society will try to make you feel guilty with their claim that "if you don't have health care, the taxpayer pays if you have an emergency" but that's the way society has set it up.
We don't buy the guilt trip. Each person should be responsible for how much they choose to allocate toward their own personal health care. Personal health goes to the heart of freedom. Too many (even on FR) buy into the social mentality.
I need you to talk with my husband....I only want high deductible insurance....don’t need doctor call insurance....and when we hit Medicare age it’s going to be a real fight because I want nothINg to do with it! What are you doing!?
What do you do with 40million+ seniors who have been completely duped by Medicare? How do we get them to opt into the private health insurance system, the finest in the world?
And chances are you'll stay healthy and not ever need insurance. I say just pay your doctor. If you're poor you can always go to the emergency room if injured or sick.
We use the pay as you go method. Having done that all of our lives, it inconceivable that anyone would do otherwise.
Get a hold of that fella Dave Ramsey and pay off everything before you retire! That way, you will be amazed at how little it actually cost to maintain a household. I could get down to specifics, but you probably would not believe what the actual cash outlay is for two people when you have no debts.
When do we re-up?
Their fallback position will be to raise your taxes, and then give you a credit to offset your health premium when and if you buy a policy
The people will get the last word. And we will eliminate the socialists from our land. They love it so much, they can move to Cuba.
It may not be that they were duped, it is what they can afford. I know seniors who live on less than $500-900 a month. They qualify for $10-30 in food stamps and commodities. And if lucky they might get some utility assistance IF the welfare queens don’t beat them to the funding first.
And it’s not just seniors that get forced into Medicare, but retired over 65 Military. They get shoved on Medicare from their Champus or Tricare Prime (they were paying for) when they turn 65 Then they go on Medicare and Tricare for Life picks up the RX and what Medicare doesn’t cover.
