SAN FRANCISCO: City has saved nothing towards $4.36 billion health care bill
SFGate: City Insider ^ | 12/16/10 | Heather Knight

Got a spare $5,500 lying around that you want to get rid of? If every single San Franciscan coughed up that amount, we could pay City Hall's retiree health care bill - for now anyway.

A new report from the controller's office shows the city has an unfunded retiree health care liability of $4.36 billion. That means it'll cost that much to pay the promised health care benefits for every current employee and retiree - and that number will keep growing as health care costs rise. By 2033, the tab will be a whopping $9.7 billion.

Guess how much the city has saved to pay down the costs so far? You guessed it. Nuthin'.

Yet one more reason democrats are trying to drive people back into cities and restrict people’s ability to live in the burbs and rural areas.

They are trying to stop people from leaving. They have enormous bills and the people will eventually just want to leave. Dems are setting it up so that it’s much harder to leave cities. Can’t have the wallets leaving on us now.

They’ll just do the same thing Obama intends to do - put everyone on Medicaid.

SF is a pathetic excuse for a city. They could have it all, but the choose to throw money away and then while about it. I suspect they will just let Obamacare handle the problem. In fact that was probably the plan all along.

What a legacy left by Newsom!

And we Californians voted him into a higher position...we’re going out in flames here

No kidding. Plus they pay for all transexual operations including psychotherapy to help them cope with it. There was a bill to pay for all inmates transexual operations as well, can’t remember if it passed.

When they started paying for sex change operations, I figured they must have money coming out of their ears.

The Democrats actually had Obamakkkare "government option" in mind as a way to bail out the cities.

They done screwed up!

BTW, urban planners aren't handmaidens to Democrat obermeisters who want to drive people into the cities ~ they're usually involved in efforts to "thin out the herd". Now a long time ago there were some who had this theory that people ought to have a place to live downtown so they could patronize theater, etc.

Television screwed that idea up. Then, the home computer came along and that put an end to the idea you had to live "downtown" to have a good time. In fact, you can live out in the woods and have a good time.

Here's how it is these days ~ look up "FLY IN A HOOKER" and you'll find that the #1 item displayed by Google.com is titled "Don't Pay A Female Escort Ashley Madison – Affairs Guaranteed 100% Secure, Anonymous, Free!"

You don't even have to stop curbside!

I didn't check to see if these gals parachute in or what ~ but when you have stuff like that going on NO ONE is trying to herd you into a city.

They will stick their sticky hands into the pockets of working taxpayers throughout America via dee-cee to be "bailed-out" because they "deserve it."

Let it fail.

Government has billions and trillions of our money. The problem is they spend billions and trillions more then they take from us.

“The problem is they spend billions and trillions more then they take from us.”

They want more taxes, but they can’t tell us where it’s going and they’ve proven they’ll always spend more than they take in.

That means it'll cost that much to pay the promised health care benefits...
Break the promise. After being "promised" health care and other bennies for the 35 years I worked at the same company - they canceled/modified almost all of the "promises" two years after I retired.

That is just silly. A broken toy never works.

We are fine with a few changes, it takes time but we are winning and, will get there. We have a generation of corruption, greed, self loathing and failure taught to them.

This is changing. Remember, losing is not an option, change is.

Never happen. The sainted homeless are the people that this liberal town cares the most for. Why they are like children and any misstep must be overlooked, because after all it is our fault that there are so many homeless in SF.

There is no way to pay for this.

You are correct, and it is the same story at a county, state and federal level. Our politicians have made promises that cannot be kept.

The real question is what happens when the people say sorry, we won't pay or when the money just flat runs out and does not exist. It is irrational to think that the people will be paupers to pay for public servants false beliefs in Santa Claus. As one looks at our future, this is the clear and until-recently-unspoken issue, how does a society deal with such irrationality?

Civil War, hyper-inflation, societal collapse or other are most likely. A mature attitude saying that we all knew it was impossible to get what is promised is unlikely IMHO.

This cannot end well.
