President Obama’s deal with congressional Republicans on extending the Bush tax cuts that has now been passed by both the House and the Senate and will be signed by him this week suggests a fundamental misreading -- by Democrats and Republicans alike -- of the implications of November’s historic election. Not only that but it suggests as well the failure of the president and both parties to deal in a rational way with the new balance of power in Washington.
Coming on the heels of the Bipartisan Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform report, which underscored the need to significantly reduce and ultimately eliminate the national debt that is more than $13 trillion, not increase it even more, we are deeply alarmed by the willingness of President Obama and both parties to sacrifice the national interest for political gain -- with a deal which at best can be viewed as the meeting in the middle of two failed policies.

Voters are looking for policymakers and political leadership that champion fiscal discipline; limited government; deficit reduction; a free market, a pro-growth agenda; and comprehensive plans to create employment opportunities, enable entrepreneurship, and aid business creation.
But, the biggest problem conservatism faces is NOT that every policy put forward in Congress these days is an assault on all of the above, and everything else that we hold dear. It is that those that claim conservatism in general have yet to mobilize in their own local districts - and FOUND WHAT 'Voters are looking for.'
Yes there was a sort of 'house cleaning' in the last election, but that was only a meager start at what needs to be done across this nation. We've only scratched the surface - and I fear this nation's voters have not the time, knowledge, will - or even the inclination, to avoid the loss of this nation.

I think the idea would be to find one or more ‘John Deans’ who could be turned to tell the truth about the whole maneuver. That would put as many politicians as bankers in prison (which would be a good start).
The public appears to be having a hard time driving their OWN message home to the Democrat Party.
The DNC refuses to LISTEN.
They aren’t clueless - they are just arrogant beyond belief.
We see them as employees running wild.
They see themselves as Royalty and see us as uppity serfs.
Your last two points apply to the Republican Party, and RNC, as well.
And too many in RINO's still remaining in Congress are simply ignoring the message voters sent!

I don’t think the message was that we want taxes raised. It was that we want programs cut. Let’s start by the feds getting out of areas where they have no Constitutional responsibility like education, health, social programs and welfare.
I think we are all peeing in the wind. The new congress will be no different from the old congress. Take that to the bank!
I want government out of EVERYTHING (almost, with the exception of maintaining a strong national defense - which they could keep with one ten thousandths of their confiscation of private wealth.)
I agree that Pat Caddell and Doug Schoen accurately analyzed the current situation in Washington and that neither political party seems to be dealing with reality. I'm very worried that, based on recent history and some of the 'veteran' Republicans being appointed to important chairmanships in congress, that we'll end up with many repeats of the 'tax cut deal' that is, as Caddell and Schoen put it: "the meeting in the middle of two failed policies". I hope I'm wrong - but if the Republicans fail us, conservatives will have to consider (gulp!) a third party. However, I would much prefer to see the Tea Party activists persuade congressional Republicans to start doing the will of the people, and not a moment too soon, at that.
Until the American public wakes up - and DEMANDS that government union control of our Congress-critter staffing is eliminated - and WE DEMAND a return to Congress meeting for only three months out of the year (as they did for over 150 years of this nation's history) - we will continue to suffer from the confiscation of our wealth at ever increasing levels.
Agreed the GOP isn’t listening now, but they did wake up to the protests at least.
The Democrats are saying that they got voted out because the they didn’t communicate clearly to the voters. Republicans aren’t claiming that they did a better job communicating to voters. Republicans are already backtracking from promises made in the campaign. Too much is already being “compromised”.
Don’t let former congressmen have privileged access as lobbyists either. They can lobby but they are OUT of Congress and get no special access to the floor.
No pensions either. Drains money from the private sector. Let them compete in the world they have crafted for the rest of us.
Sadly, even some of the newcomers seem to think it was the Ethanol Party that got them elected.
Well Jim... a 3rd party will never make it. But, what would help enormously would be conservatives getting serious about owning their local and state levels of the GOP. They simply don’t, and have not, for all too many years. Just darken the door of your own district committee - and see what lurks there, voting, and moving non-conservatives up the political ladder.
Well, your heart's in the right place, but that would provide us with a defense allowance of about $ 150.00 per year for each active duty member of our armed forces. So, if everything went to salary (no new or replacement equipment or supplies), we'd have to get them to serve for less than three dollars per week.
Everything is very expensive these days and it's time to start cutting everywhere we can, but we have to be realistic about what we need to spend for an adequate defense.
The American people will not be mocked by a political class whose definition of bipartisanship is the bankrupting of the United States.

Well - I agree wholeheartedly - and I won't quibble numbers much, but when I think of 13 trillion dollars evaporating over just the last five years or so - one ten thousandth of which is $13,000,000,000 - I think we could pay our soldiers at least triple what they currently get.
But more important than salary for soldiers is the equipment we give them to fight with. INHO, our 'leaders' have allowed that to stagnate to insufferable levels.

Methinks Patrick Caddell and Douglas Schoen have forgotten that the RATS are still in power.
Let’s revisit their thoughts and ideas, say, six months from now. I expect they will be amazed.
The LAME DUCK Congress is connecting to the message and ramming as much of The Agenda through as they possibly can at the eleventh hour. That is far from clueless.

Sorry but it isn’t congress that is clueless it is the American people and voters and yes that includes a lot of posters here on FR.
What most fail to realize is that socialists do not care what the sheep want or think, they only care about what they want.
So it’s the stupid American people that don’t get it.
'We The People' are the most culpable of all - in that 'we' don't act as our Founders expected - and our Grandfathers once were committed to. 'We' opted for doing virtually nothing - other than watching TV, partying, vacationing, going to ball games - and generally burying 'our' heads in the sand.
The problem is that being a 'watchmen on the wall' takes lots of time and effort AND MONEY - from everyone. Noting that there are monthly meetings of our political parties, in our local districts and counties - yet less than .01 percent of 'conservatives' care enough to ever darken the doors of any of these very important meetings.
The lazy American 'conservative' should be term-limited in my estimation... you lose your right to vote if you don't attend to your duty as a citizen on a continuous basis... and that means caring enough to get in the car, turn the ignition key and drive to these KEY meetings, where you live.
Likely less than .04 percent of FReepers attend any local political party meetings, much less assist in GOTV or contribute a moment of their precious time to assisting conservative candidates in campaign necessities.
