The Senate has just voted to end debate on a bill that would lift the ban on gays serving openly in the military, essentially clearing the measure for passage and signature by the president.
Lawmakers voted 63 to 33 to end debate on the current policy, put in place by former president Bill Clinton, informally known as "don't ask don't tell."
The Senate could vote on final passage of the measure as early as today but it will most likely happen on Sunday or Monday.
"We are on the verge of ending 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' for good," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said after the vote "This is one of those moments in our history when we stepped up and squared our policies with the values this nation was founded upon."

62 years ago, some said that nobody from the South would enlist if certain social values were imposed on the Army. President Truman ignored them and enlistment from the South actually went up. Go figure.
I will be surprised if the number of openly homosexual members is more than 10,000.
I think the number of actual gay marriages was a very low percentage as well. This isn’t really about a groundswell of interest by gay people to serve the country, it’s about sticking a finger in the eye of normalcy, an “in your face” move.
Is there any way they can reverse it? It would require passage of a new bill, and Obama would veto it for sure.
Make him veto it. Looking at 2012 breathing down his neck, he might well be afraid to. Nobody supports it in the real worldnot the voters, not the military.
My guess is the Dems and RINOs did this for the money while they could, not because they thought they could make it stick.
yes I will and I will work tirelessly until this is overturned.
Now do you support repeal?
cc:
While we are all up in arms, how about signing the petition from the Victory Institute to support Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos.
The purpose of this petition is not to speak for or against the repeal of the law, but to counter recent efforts calling for Gen. Amos resignation. He has served our country with honor for 38 years, and his dedication to the Marine Corps is without question. His statements were founded upon the concerns of the men and women who are directly affected by the law. However, Gen. Amos stated that if Dont Ask, Dont Tell is in fact repealed, the Marine Corps would get in step and move smartly to implement the changes.
The input of all branches of the Armed Forces is essential in a matter that could prove detrimental to the defense of this nation. Statements such as Gen. Amos should be welcomed, not silenced.
I’m glad I served and got out of the military in 1970. No way would I enlist, now, if soldiers had to deal with today’s mess.
There have been gay service members since there was military. This is apolitical move to give them special status then ask for special treatment then yell discrimination when they don't get their way. It will lead to trouble within the ranks, believe me.
In the end, not really close. 3 more than they needed, and a few other republicans didn’t even vote (although they don’t need to to stop cloture, it may indicate a desire not to go on record).
I will believe this poster has cleared up the misstatement, but with emotions running high, on the board, yours is a valid question. I perhaps should have proceeded earlier.
Nice moral relativism you've got going there. Perhaps you should be posting at DU?
You know not what you speak of. I have worked with the military for almost 20 years and the outrage is far greater than what you read in the liberal media. Why woiuld you choose thios time to belief their tripe?
All I know are extremely pissed off, especially the Marines. One truth I have learned of this world is that it is not a good thing to have a boatload of Marines pissed off at you.
have you served in a combat unit to base your view or is it the usual crap of well I know a couple of queers and they’re nice?
you assume your son is straight.
homosexuals have always been a weak link in all military organizations.
wikileaks is proof of this since a homosexual supplied the recent military docs.
Abu grab was a cell of fetishists lead by a military commander who was “in the closet”.
homosexuals have no place in the military.
murkowski’s D.C. phone message line is full.
The call just hangs up.
Go camping with couple of same sex as you homosexuals in the mountains, for about 9 months to a year.
As I said, homosexuality is a sin, but let's let God sort it out! Let's let the brave men and women that want to serve our country, serve.
I am afraid you are confusing homosexuals and homosexual activists. DADT already permits homosexuals and lesbians to serve, as long as they keep quiet about it and do whatever they do off base and out of sight of their fellow troops.
Homosexual activists insist on the right to do what they want when and where they want, and also insist that anyone who objects must be punished for committing a hate crime.
Good discipline simply will not allow that sort of behavior. What, are we going to have sergeants afraid to speak frankly to their troops? Officers afraid to discipline their men for fear of being dishonorably discharged? Because that is what this is leading to.

it’s idiots like this person why the queer agenda is being passed.
They think because they know someone who is a queer that they have no problem with their agenda but never thier agenda is dong to our country.
fergetiaboutit! Just wait. Once this becomes law, the FIRST thing that’s going to happen is that the military will institute Gay Diversity Training and EVERY marine will be ORDERED to attend. The brainwashing will proceed from there.
Honestly, I think deals were made to kill the Dream Act and let this pass. While a disgusting piece of legislation, this one is more easily undone than the Dream Act.
please calm down...you and I are relatively new here. Doesn’t a person have a right to express an opinion? Yes and one does have a right to challenge an opinion. I am the whole board to remain calm.
don’t know who you have talked to or if you have served but I know plenty still serving and talked to a friend in Kabul .
None of us know one person who wanted repeal but of course the MSM will have you think differently.
It'll probably be issued in olive drab containers; Lubrication Anal M2011.
Johnson & Johnson is probably already assembling a contract proposal.
what will the pentagon appointees and obama do if those 40% marine leaders actually do resign (and others)?
will they command them at gunpoint?
I am asking please, do not let this thread be pulled and please act on the phone, calmly. I cannot pull it, but I am posting to myself, God Figure It Out.
The Senate has just voted to force our nation back into a draft within 5 years.
People like Collins and Brown are simply focused on the “the next day.” In that sense, perhaps, it is not a big deal.
But what about 5 years from now? 10 years? What about when “gay pride parades” in the military start? What about when the politically correct investigations of Officers (esp. Christian ones) start? What about when the bunking with openly practicing homosexuals begins?
Will you still support the military as an institution then???

FOOTNOTE: FNC reporter and reperterette are GLEEFUL that the homosexuals will be allowed in the military. New agencies should not be allowed to base in NYC.
Well, what can I say. The Lord is working here not in just the afterlife. This policy will doom many to death and this country will not prosper following other gods (politically correct gods). If it is sin as you believe, then a policy of sin, gets the wages of sin (death).
bring this bill back up near the election and mention it all the time .
Come election time with this in peoples minds they will not vote for this like the marriage acts.
Of course we still have the dopes who say well I know a couple of homosexuals and they’re alright but maybe they might wake the hell up for once.
If you look at the text of the actual bill; there not much to it. You just get one sentence saying that the particular law from 1993 is no longer valid. What does that mean, that the military will then be able to set its own commonsense policies about homosexuality? No, I don’t think they’ll let that happen. Instead you’ll have gays running around base, engaging in behavior that would land any straight soldier in hot water, with the leadership’s hands tied because homosexuality will have become a protected status. I say that, because this is what happens. Go to any pride parade or gay bar in the country; such public indecency wouldn’t be tolerated from any other group - but free passes are generously handed out based on an individual’s claim to this one particular form of perversion.
“I am going to say something that I am sure will get me flamed....I also won’t be on FR for most of the day, so others will call it a hit and run.....but....
I think most here are really overreacting to DADT. Although I, personally, think homosexuality is a sin, I think this isone sin I will let God handle in the afterlife.”
—Disagree.
Simple question for you: given the fact that many male gays have been known to engage in extremely risky sexual behavior (which is part of the reason AIDS affects them the most), and the fact that well...soldiers bleed on the battlefield, do you really believe that people won’t think twice before joining the military and wanting to serve with openly gay people?
To add, homosexuality is incompatable with military service, and starting today, military service will be incompatible with Christianity. From this day forward, I’ll have no respect for anyone enlisting or re-enlisting.
No military member should EVER be forced to live with a homosexual against their will
It is clearly written gay and lesbianism is against His Word. Our government passes laws against Gods almighty word?
Woe to he

Some cal that progress -I call them progressives. Some reference such trivial facts to bolster leftist arguments -I call them useful idiots.
It’ll take a couple years, not until the worst president in the history of the United States (except FDR and LBJ) has departed.
I have hope that cooler heads will prevail and DADT will be brought back. The Marines always win!
It CAN be done. California - Proposition 8 - overturned a law legalizing gay marriage.
Semper Fi
I see no reason whatsoever to remain calm.
You lost at the word “faggots.”
I am of the opinion that the views expressed by people on matters of homosexuality are strongly influenced by whether they have openly gay people in their sphere of life.
I think homosexuality is abhorent, but I also think adultery is abhorent, as is any sex outside of marriage; I also think anal sex is abhorent, although that is all the more common now in heterosexual couples.
So when I see some guy, or some woman, at work, or on the street, I would simply prefer NOT to know what sexual perversion they have chosen for their private lives.
But when I know that people are gay, I simply ignore it, and hope they don’t try to remind me too much. In exchange, I don’t tell them about my own sex life. I assume that somy guy in the locker room at the gym is gay, I know gay people at work, I’ve had other gay aquantainces. I don’t hide my belief that they are sinning, but I don’t beat them up about it any more than I beat up all the other sinners (which would include myself, and every other human).
The only way to stop it, will be to force congress to change the UCMJ and allowing heterosexuals to opt-out of the military honorably.
“No military member should EVER be forced to live with a homosexual against their will.”
That’s right, and there must be laws put in place to prevent it and these members of the military will have to be separated from the unit and there goes cohesion. Exactly what is the main concern of those on the front.
you can now bet they will want DOMA overturned now due to them saying they can die for their country but cannot marry in their state and you know what?
We’ll still have dopes saying they have no problem with their agenda because they know a couple.
They are already there serving.
