Sixty-five years ago this month, Gen. George S. Patton Jr., hero of World War II and an outspoken critic of the Soviets, was en route to a Sunday hunting trip, a day before permanently leaving Europe, when he was critically injured in a vehicle accident on a deserted two lane highway near Mannheim, Germany.
A large US army truck that Pattons driver later said was waiting for them, suddenly and without signaling abruptly turned into his limousines path, causing a head-on crash. Even though Patton had an aide with him and the driver of the truck had one or two passengers in the cab, no one but Patton was hurt. He suffered a paralyzing broken neck.
Despite it being early on a no-work day, a horde of military personnel, including a brigadier general, quickly arrived at the scene. And although there were facilities in Mannheim, he was taken to a hospital 20 miles away where, when he arrived, the prognosis was bad. They expected him to die.
But the tough general, vowing to go home and tell block-busting secrets, rallied. And in a little over a week he was fit enough to be readied for a grueling trans-Atlantic flight home. On the eve of that flight, he had a sudden relapse. Blood embolisms choked his breathing. Within 24 hours he was dead.

Interesting,I saw something about this back a ways and the presumption then was he was killed by a blow to the neck with a rubber bushing fired at close range.
Thanks for posting, I’ve become increasingly interested in Patton’s death as the years go by.
From the grassy knoll.
A few more if they're not doing anything...George Washington, JP Jones, Thomas Jefferson (along with James Madison, if for nothing else, to explain to the ACLU what was meant in our founding documents) Stonewall Jackson and Blackjack Pershing.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Hello All, here’s the link to Amazon for the recent book on this topic. An entire show on Coast To Coast AM was devoted to this topic.
As much as one wants to believe our government would not have one of its greatest warriors iced, both his popularity and outspoken anti-communist views certainly would have been a huge impediment to the post-war agreements hammered out a Yalta. We're only now coming to grips with (and paying for) the level of communist infiltration into western diplomatic and intelligence circles. I can't say definitively that the OSS killed Patton, but I think it would be safe to assert that there's more to the circumstances surrounding his death than has been publicly aired.
There have been suspicions about this for many years.
This adds further details that I haven’t heard before.
It wouldn’t be too surprising. Roosevelt was surrounded by Communists, and was virtually a Communist himself. And although Harry Truman seems to be viewed more sympathetically by conservatives now than he was at the time, he was responsible for giving China to the Communists.
Patton, of course, wanted to take Berlin for the western allies, before the Russians got there, but he was not permitted to do it. Roosevelt had agreed to hand over Eastern Europe to good old Uncle Joe, as he was commonly called during the war.
Conspiracy, no. Automobile accident, yes.
Are you serious?
I am sure that you know that the man driving Patton’s limo on the fateful day was the same man who was driving JFK’s limo in Dallas on 11.22.1963.
Moreover, it was that very same limo driver who drove President Lincoln to Ford’s Theater.
Even more amazing is the fact that the Titanic sank exactly 47 years (and some months and days) after Lincoln’s “assassination”.
I think that it is pretty clear that Pattons death will go unpunished regardless of the results of any investigation.
As this article points out the driver of the truck is already dead. Those who ordered the assassination undoubtedly would be even older than the driver ensuring that they also are already dead.
Yes certainly Pattons death should be investigated but the opportunity for punishment is long gone.
He would not have started a war, but he would have been impossible to ignore, along with Macarthur on the subject of partial warfare, political BS. He most assuredly was killed by forces within our own govt.
“From the grassy knoll.”
No from behind
And it is even stranger that while President’s Lincoln’s name was Lincoln and Lincoln was born on a Continent, he choose not to drive a Lincoln Continental, but a Cadillac, which was named after a French explorer!
Patton’s military career was pretty much finished at the end of WWII because of his political views and outspoken attitude. There was no need to kill him.
This is the release in paperback of a book first published in 2008. I went through it then and compared to other books and to the doctor’s statement on Patton’s death. The surgeon was flown to Germany from the US and was on the same plane with Mrs. Patton. Reading his report, discounts these post-war speculations. One of the reasons for the “medical facilities 20 miles away” instead of in Mannheim, was that the facility was much better quality.
There has been speculation that it was a hit since the day that it happened. But the only evidence anyone has ever actually been able to produce is the obvious fact that Stalin had a motive to kill him. No actual evidence that he did.
Patton was murdered by our own U.S. crooked Government.
Patton is by far my favortite hidtorical figure. His early life is actually far more interesting than what he did during WW2.
> I only half jokingly ask God that if he could spare Ronald Reagan and George Patton for a while ...
I wouldn’t mind Joe McCarthy being around either.
In Ford theatre no less.
I think it was a “lone” surgeon and a “magic” scapel. Remember; the gurney went back....and to the left!
I put nothing past our criminal mafia govt.
you mean the “bonus army”?
Of course, this doesn't change his role in defeating the Nazis and helping to expose the Holocaust to the world.
I wouldnt mind Joe McCarthy being around either.
I know she’s not American, but Queen Isabella knew how to free Spain of it’s Muslim problem. I’d like to add her to the list too..
Here is a political reality check.
1. The US public opinion OPPOSED entry into WWII until Pearl Harbor, led by conservative Republicans.
2. It is easy to oppose the Soviets in retrospect, but at the time they were our vital ally. We had won WWII together.
3. There is NO WAY the US public would have favored a continuation of WWII, turned against our ally the Soviets.
I have no opinion about Patton’s demise, but I generally am skeptical about conspiracies.
Far too many involved.
Muawiyah met Arthur's niece and knows Hamid Karzai. His uncle, a WWII Ranger, appeared in several wartime movie reels with Patton.
That's all you need for a huge conspiracy theory about something ~ I've already found several on the net ~ absolutely amazing.
“In Ford theatre no less.”
Not only that, but on the day he was shot Lincoln thought about riding to Ford’s Theater in a Lincoln Continental.
And after he was shot, they buried Lincoln on the Continent!
And while Lee Harvey Oswald worked in a Warehouse, John Wilkes Booth may have at onetime gone to a Whore House.
He was assassinated by the Russians to keep from finishing the war. He was also a threat to FDR as a Presidential candidate, he may have changed our future.
There are Soviet figures in the picture, as well as the vast pink underbelly of the Washington Administration which gave Eastern Europe to Uncle Joe with a bow.
OSS was duped by the NKVD in the rush to be allies against the Axis.
Gehlen was penetrated, and his bunch absorbed under Operation Paperclip enjoyed a special relationship with OSS and CIA for fifty years--such is the Agency's own admission.
Patton was loud about it. He was removed.
China fell; Korea presented as low-hanging fruit.
They could have waited until today when they have one of their own in the White House.
Merry Christmas, bray; you nailed it.
My dad was in Germany at the time and the rumors they got pertained to Patton’s murder being a German Werwolf operation.
FDR died eight months before Patton did.
However, I agree that the circumstances surrounding his death have always been suspicious.
His lineage, the time at vmi and west point, the olympics where he got 5th in the pentahlon, etc.
As for the bonus army stuff, he was not alone in that and was following orders. Yes it sucked and the govt was to blame for not honoring its obligations, not patton individually.
Wonder if Mark Levin would have any opinion on this, being that he’s a big admirer of Patton.
FDR was reelected in 44 and would not stand for reelection, and coronation, until 48. I am not so sure Patton would have been his adversary. Truman was always worried about MacArthur and of course that never came to fruition either as MacArthur lost the first primary he was in effectively killing any hope he could win.
That said, I do believe there was a conspiracy to take him out. He openly was using former Nazi party members. While our OSS was also using these same people, they did not wish it to be become an issue after the war ended. So, I believe our own government had more to do with his demise than did the soviets although I would not put it past them. They did try to take out Gen Haig years later when he was in charge of SHAPE. Interestingly, they tried to kill him while he was in a vehicle.
This picture was taken at the exact moment that Garfield was told about the assassination of President Garfield. At first glance, he appears to be surprised, but if you stare at the picture for a few moments, you will notice that it is not a look of surprise, but rather elation.
I think Johnny Cash had his ancestor’s order it, so he could write a song about it later
If Patton believed in reincarnation, he may already be back on earth...hope he’s on our side if so...
If the conspiracy theories were proved correct, then SOMEBODY must be punished. I nominate La Raza. Wipe 'em out.
Makes as much sense as punishing all of us financially today for the sins of slavery perpetrated by the people who lived 150 to 400 years ago.
Hm. “Block-busting secrets.” Makes you wonder if they had anything to do with what his fellow (but much more liberal and friendly-to-the-Soviets) General, Dwight Eisenhower, was referring to in his farewell speech, when he warned about the “military-industrial complex.” [You can see Ike’s speech at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y06NSBBRtY or read it at http://www.h-net.org/~hst306/documents/indust.html.]
Patton’s death occurred 65 years ago Tuesday.
