Cop shoots, kills family dog (Golden Retriever)

A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.

But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.

“He’s a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but he’s never bitten anyone.”

A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

What a moron.....

The biggest danger from Goldens is being licked to death. If he had shouted *Bad dog! Go home!* the dog would have probably stopped dead in her tracks, rolled over and exposed her jugular, and then needed counseling for years afterwards.

I’ve met very few dogs who can stand up to being yelled at with *Bad dog!* without dropping their tail and backing off.

How stupid.

That poor family. We had a Golden when I was a child and she was a sweetheart.

If a cop doesn’t recognize the difference between a golden retriever and German Sheppard, he should be laughed off the police force.

What’s the difference between a 75 pound attacking dog, and a 75 pound attacking dog?

We moved into a house several years ago and the neighbor behind us had a Rottweiler that was an outside dog. It would go nuts whenever it saw us in the back yard. My wife was afraid to go out in the yard, so she had me build a privacy fence. Every afternoon I would fill my pocket with dog bones and go out to work on the fence. I fed the dog bones. Within three or four days the dog would meet me at the fence with her tail wagging. She was a really sweet dog that was just doing what she was supposed to do.

Or just yelled "SIT". Of course he would have had to give it a treat.

All this could have been avoided if the owner had kept their dog under control.

Try reading the article. They have an Invisible Fence.

we had a labrador/aussie mix. He would go wild barking at the postman and once got out. She sprayed him with something before he was pulled back inside. If he had gotten to her, he would have jumped on her and tried to hug her, just like he did with any of the utlity people. The post office refused to deliver our mail again until we wrote a letter and moved our box to the curb. Of course, they changed carriers as soon as we did. The new carrier wasn’t so freaked.

The breed. Honestly, if you continue on in this vein, you are in for a long afternoon.

It was a golden retriever, for crying out loud.

I understand your point but I have a question. If you, as a private citizen, are walking down the street minding your own business, and somebody’s dog comes running toward you, what do you do?

What I do is stop and face the dog. If it stops and doesn’t show signs of aggression, I back up a little, and soon go on my way. Shooting it, even if I happened to be armed, does not occur to me as a first response. But then I’m not a cop with control issues.

Goldens don't 'attack'. They bark, whine, and beg.

What's a cop who can't tell the difference between an 'attacking' Golden Retriever and an 'attacking' German Sheppard?

An unemployed cop.

I guess I'm going to be on the "wrong" side of this.

Yep. Deploying pepper spray works wonders on dogs. Of course, the simpering little wimp would have had to let the dog get within 30' of him for effective stream contact. Might have soiled his lace unmentionables...

Anyone, and I do mean anyone, who harms one of my family’s companion animals has signed his or her own death warrant.

I’m with you. I don’t think a cop is required to wait to be bitten before defending himself against an attacking dog any more than he needs to wait to see if the gun is loaded. If your dog attacks (or appears to attack) someone, they can defend themselves. Keep your dog confined.

That being said — the anti-jack-booted-thug and my-puppy-is-my-baby crowd are going to gang-up on this one.

That's 'zactly what I've done with the dogs in the yard behind me (one a pit). All the dogs are now just one big happy pack.

About this time I always come into these dog vs. cop threads and remind people that the cop who lived two doors North of us had a couple of rotweilers he used to stake out on chains in his front yard.

When the street flooded, we couldn't cut through his yard to get to the school bus because the chains were just that long and the dogs would get us.

People complained about this all the time but he was a cop. Even the convicted bankrobbers in the neighborhood were afraid of this puke.

Then, one day his 4 year old kid got out of the house and his own dogs killed and ate him.

“We have a golden/black lab mix. Barks at our postman and our postman is terrified of her. I can’t figure it out myself.

She probably wants to jump up, lick his face and beg for a treat.”

You are just the kind of dog owner that gives all dog owners a bad name. You think your dog in nice, and it probably is, but a strange barking dog is a threat. You should be polite and make sure your dog doesn’t threaten your postman.

It’s your lucky day, BE!

*Another* dead/dying/tortured family dog story for you “enjoy”.

Explain to the “liberal/emotional/irrational” folks here why you feel that no harsh punishment should be dealt because it’s “just a soulless animal whom God gave dominion over” to the cop.

[Good luck with *that*, chief...ta ta!]
