A cuddle for baby boy with the youngest parents in the UK
Daily Mail - UK ^ | 20th December 2010 | Andy Dolan

Cradling the new arrival, April Webster may look like the proud big sister.

But the baby-faced schoolgirl and her sometime boyfriend Nathan Fishbourne have just become Britain’s youngest parents after conceiving son Jamie when they were both only 13.

April and schoolfriend Nathan started having unprotected sex after they began dating in September last year.

She was ‘too embarrassed’ to tell her parents about the sexual side to their relationship until she found out she was pregnant a day before her 14th birthday.

The baby arrived by Caesarean section on November 15, weighing 8lb 14oz. The teenagers are still trying to work out how to cope with parenthood while still children themselves – and even whether they remain a couple.

While Nathan, who is now also 14, insists they are still an item, April claimed they were having a ‘cooling off’ period and was unsure if their relationship would resume.

She said: ‘He has not turned his back on the baby but he’s asking to do things like have him stay over at his house and that has caused some arguments. We have a few things to sort out’.

Yesterday Nathan’s grandmother, Deirdre Rolph, 66, added to the confusion by claiming the teenagers were ‘very in love’.

The pair, who were in the same year at St Cenydd Comprehensive School in their home town of Caerphilly, South Wales, started seeing each other when they were aged 13. April left school 16 weeks into the pregnancy and now attends an educational centre for young mothers.

April lives with parents Jeff, 38, a taxi driver, and Maria, 36 at their four-bedroom end-of-terrace home.

Nathan’s parents, Ron, 53, a retired truck driver, and Julie, 43, said they were angry with him at first over the pregnancy, but were now ready to ‘accept Jamie into our family’.

They're now ready to accept Jamie into the family? Jamie's now part of your family, through no fault of his own, whether you're ready to "accept" him or not. God help this poor baby boy.

Good size baby. I wish them well. It will be a hard road, it is possible for them to make it.

I’ve got an idea: Let these two kids support the child. Not the govt. If that hurts the child, so be it. Welcome to lefty-ville, home of the bankrupt.

What a travesty. Kids having kids.

That country has already been down the toilet.

It's always such a great idea to let young teenagers "date". I remember my mother laughing at me when I asked her if I could date at age 13. She explained that I couldn't date until I was able to support a wife and family. At the time, in my infinite wisdom, I thought she was horribly mean and unfair.

Would that the rest of our society was so horribly mean.

Pity all three of these children.

One is encouraged to infer that the reporter is A-OK with 13-year-olds having sex, but just worried that they were having "unprotected sex". This is another new mandatory prefix in journalism that touts the sources progressive bonifides.

I do too. It will be a very hard road because the parents are children themselves. They need good adult guidance from someone that they can and do trust.

It is a travesty but they made a good decision in having the child. Hopefully it is the first of many good decisions they will make in raising their child.

We can’t have it both ways - preach pro-life then condemn people who have children despite less than optimal circumstances.

Not uncommon in the US. There must be hundreds of similar cases annually of 13-year-old mothers.

I’m surprised the Daily Mail even did a piece on it. Maybe its more of a novelty in Britain.

As if “protection” is the magic bullet. If only these poor children had known. (/sarc)

It is impossible for leftists to comprehend self control of bodily urges. These primitive organisms lack the higher level mental processes to override their feeding, emotional, and sex drives.

If stupidity were only mildly phosphorescent dear Dierdre would glow in bright daylight, never mind in the dark.

Okay so we have a pair of 14 year olds who are already parents of a healthy baby. I say get married, work after school, and be the best parents possible. I see plenty of lousy parents of perfect age so the bar ain’t too high.

By the time they are 22, he should have a decent job, the boy will be eight and they can have some more babies.

"She was ‘too embarrassed’ to tell her parents..."

Embarrassed? My daughter would have been terrified. The boy would probably have moved out of state for his safety.

FWIW, Juliet was 13. So was Loretta Lynn.

I, too, wish them and their baby well. It would have been very easy to abort that little guy, but his mother chose to have him instead. She made an initial mistake, but did not choose to “fix” it—that is, commit a far worse sin—by killing her baby.

Prayers for the baby, too. With so many broken families around, his chances are probably no worse than many others who are born into our broken culture. Perhaps better, with a loving mother.

Nope, but the appropriate age for becoming a mother is indeed one of those culturally rather than biologically determined factors liberals are so fond of.

What they forget, of course, is that in our culture 13 is considered way too young, and for excellent reason. Renaissance or hillbilly culture notwithstanding.

Indeed. It's never too late to start doing the right thing. Although we may carry the consequences of our mistakes for a long time, trying to "fix" that with more bad decisions only compounds the problems. Having the baby was the right thing to do. Now, there are many more big decisions that must be carefully weighed and made.
