Christmas tree at centre of Korea dispute

SOUTH Korean marines are guarding a Christmas tree, the latest focus of tensions with North Korea following Seoul's artillery drill near the disputed sea border a day earlier.

A South Korean church was planning to switch on Christmas lights in the shape of a tree atop a military-controlled hill near the tense land border today - the first such display for seven years.

The ceremony will come a day after South Korea staged a live-fire exercise on the border island of Yeonpyeong, which was bombarded by North Korea last month.

The North forswore retaliation despite previously vowing a deadly response to the South's drill. But officials were concerned the Christmas tree could become a target for attack.

"Marines are maintaining the highest level of alertness around the hill," a defence ministry spokesman said, citing the North's continued threats to strike border propaganda facilities.

I bet our ACLU can get that South Korean Christmas tree (Oops, I apologize for using the word Christmas, double apologize for capitalizing it) down faster than a crazed regiment of North Korean sappers.

Ummmmm....

Perhaps I’m being overly picky - and guilty of ‘not getting into the spirit’ - but...

I don’t see a *tree*.......

Locally it is called “Light Tower.” Perhaps that’s more accurate. Still the shape of tower is modeled after Christmas tree.

Me neither. A Christmas monument, for sure, however.

And what has the USA done to spread the truth in N. Korea?

Leaflets? Broadcasts? Anything?

TLR,

My they will NOT like that in 개풍군 (Gaepung-gun) area across the river where the KPA soldiers and their artillery (and maybe SA-2) are stationed. And for Pete's sake, you are going to see that beautiful thing alllll way way into downtown KAESONG CITY, NORTH KOREA tonight, across the very tense DMZ into the People's Hell of the DPRK. Imagine when Kim Jong Eun got the report. Probably headed right for the Twinkies and Ding Dongs as comfort food for stress, washing it down with Hennessey's and then j*rking off to Playboy magazine. North folks there, living in their homes by candlelight, with four layers of winter clothes one freezing, sleeping without heat in minus 10centigrade weather, will see that beacon of light shining all throughout the night along with the Cross of Jesus Christ atop it. A simple statement without any words.

It is so poetic that LIGHT (Good) penetrates so deeply into the Kingdom of DARKNESS (ruled by the Prince of Darkness, Evil and Satan Himself), and that the evil ones absolutely cannot stand such a light visible by the average North Korean people as that will get them thinking. They are so sensitive over this. This is really going to make them go ballistics. I would be on guard for a long time over this.

Anatoli Kuznetzov (author of “Babi Yar”), defected to Britain during the communist years. He said the Soviets didn’t really fear the West’s rockets, which they knew they would never use. What they feared was religion. (That would undermine them.)
