Cop shoots, kills family dog(GA)

A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.

But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.

“He’s a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but he’s never bitten anyone.”

A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.

The police department has launched an internal investigation into the incident and will not discuss the incident until it is completed, Sgt. Otis Willis said Monday afternoon.

The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

A resident called police to report that someone was selling meat from the back of a white pickup truck, King said. The friend of one of her children had parked his white truck in front of the family's home, and King believes the officer was checking it to confirm it was involved.

"My neighbor saw the whole thing," King said. "He was shocked how quickly the officer pulled his gun."

Boomer was killed about 25 feet from his spot on the front porch, close to her front door, King said. He was not on a leash.

King said she wasn't home when Boomer was shot, but three teenagers were in her house. King said she received a frantic call from her 19-year-old son Jonathan.

"Mom! He killed my dog," King said her son screamed.

"He was not on a leash. "
I have been attacked 3 times by dogs not on a leash. I have no sympathy.

Were you in the dogs’ yard or were you just innocently walking down the street? This story does keep changing, but it did say early on that the dog had an electric underground fence with collar and the policeman was in the dog’s yard.

I never have seen a dog respond to a command by a stranger.

I read yesterday that they had an invisible fence and the dog was inside that fence. It was the officer that trespassed.

Here’s the police chief’s contact if you’d like to tell him your feelings. greg.porter@co.clayton.ga.us

Yesterday the article said the dog WAS on it’s owner’s property. I read it and it was very clear about that point.

Unless you arrived recently on this planet you know that dogs bark and run at you when you enter their territory. THAT’S THEIR JOB. It’s not an attack, it’s not life threatening, you don’t have to use a gun to stop it. Anyone who is so afraid for their personal safety that they shoot a dog for approaching should never be a cop.

I guess that the officer is deathly afraid of dogs, has no experience, and no judgment. Too bad for the family and the dog.

If I were police commissioner there that would disqualify any person for the job of patrolman. It really does anyway.

It wasn’t a burglsry, it was the “suspicious activity” of “someone” selling meat out of a truck.

Sounds like the Schwann’s Mob.......

“The officer, whose name was not released...”

Notice that it’s ALWAYS this way... if the shooter is a LEO, the name is “not released,” and the local media are too lazy, corrupt or intimidated to do the basic reporting spadework required to find out?

Now read the other 490+ posts...

i would, but I don't think I could stomach having to read the inevitable police -state supporters who believe police have carte blanche to kill anything that could possibly frighten a 5 year old. (Or just kill because they wanted to).

Yes, but early reports (I am in the area) were a burglary call at 4 am. That story was gone by mid morning.

"The saddest part of it was that Boomer was still wagging tail after he was shot," said King.

In case one doesn't know this, family dogs are NOT just dogs. The 'cop' may have just as well shot any other member of the family, the emotional reaction would be the same.

I'm not equating the family dog with a child, but the emotional attachment comes from the same place and can be very strong. The family's reaction would have been almost the same as if one of the children had been shot and killed, since in many ways, one of their children was shot and killed.

What is the justice for causing anyone this kind of cruelty, pain and suffering? Should the punishment be greater for someone in a position of trust and authority who does this kind of damage?

If I were on a jury, the maximum penalties would barely seem sufficient, especially for the PD turning such a loose cannon on society.

scene 1, I was riding my bicycle on the sidewalk when a dog attacked my bike, knocked me down, and went after my head. I grabbed the dogs head, lifted it up off the ground, and threw it about 30 feet ( it was a black lab ) the stupid a$$ owners on the front porch proceeded to yell at me for hurting their dog.

scene #2, I was in my backyard, with a chain link fence between me and my neighbor, when his dog decided that my wife tending our garden was more than he could handle. He went over the fence and attacked my wife. I put him down with a shovel. It lived, but the owners could not understand why I hit their dog with a shovel, even though it was in my yard, attacking my wife. ( this was a pitbull )

Scene #3, I was in my garage working on one of my powertools, when I heard a low pitched growl. My neighbors black lab was in my garage, down on his front paws, growling at me. I had a shovel right next to me. I grabbed the shovel, spun around, and hit the thing square in the head. It went down. I grabbed it, threw it on my neighbors driveway, and told them to keep it in the yard, or on a leash, or I would shoot it. This particular animal jumps fences, goes after people, runs away. But it will not go into my garage, or come over on my property. If it is out front, I just say, in a low growl, get home...and it goes.

I do not have a problem with dogs in general...I do have a problem with dog owners that feel their animal ( yes, it is an animal ) has the same rights as a human. In any story that involves the killing of a dog, I will reserve judgement until the entire story is told. Until then, In my mind, the useless, ignorant, irresponsible owners of said animal are to blame...

I wonder, when I read these threads, what the legal ramifications are of you defending your pet from a cop using deadly force against your pet.

Most places (other than the accursed inner cities) you are allowed to defend someone being attacked. What about your pet?

You’d be hung by your testicles from every Court in the land. That includes if you sprayed the officer with a water hose, hit him with your fist or a 2X4 or shot him with a shotgun.

Fascism is smoothly and silently creeping across America, government controls you and yours because American citizen are not resisting the changes.
