Male Victims Get Lost in Domestic Abuse Data

When Adele Freeman fired five .38-caliber bullets into her boyfriend in 2000, she contributed to an often-overlooked statistic within the sometimes deadly world of partner abuse: namely, that more than one-third of all homicides each year connected to domestic violence are perpetrated by women.

"Men can be victimized in the same way women can," said Laura Martin, the Calvert County, Md., state's attorney who helped secure Freeman's first-degree murder conviction in 2002. "And it's not just the violence. It's about control, dominion, power," she said.

The fact of female abusers and male victims is often lost in the discussion of domestic violence. In fact, women advocates have used selective statistics - the same federally funded survey that found women are as equally abusive to men - to bolster their plea for funding and services. That absence of attention to the men's side of the coin has contributed to an imbalance of services for men in abusive relationships.

"This is the best-kept secret on family violence," said Murray Straus, a sociologist who led the commissioned survey in 1975, and again in 1985 with the same results. "There is a tremendous effort to suppress and deny these results."

No one disputes that when physical violence occurs, women are prone to more serious injury than men, however, Straus and others caution that this should not "obscure" the fact that about a third of men sustain injuries from partner violence, or homicide.

Bill Hall of Adam's House, a health and wellness center in Suitland, Md., agreed. He called domestic violence an "equal opportunity" issue that often gets overlooked by the 24 or so women's advocacy centers throughout the state.

A woman can hit a man, curse him, throwing things at him, etc., and if she manages to get him to touch her in response, she will have him jailed.

Even men who restrain a violent woman are charged with assault.

Not a fair world.

How much reported abuse is there in same sex partner households?

The guy who called the police in the Lawrence v. Texas case was the abused boyfriend of one of the two men. He even had a pending abuse case against one of the men when he was murdered in a case that has never been solved.

There are women who've left abusive relationships with men, shaking up with women, only to learn that women hit too.

... more than one-third of all homicides each year connected to domestic violence are perpetrated by women.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw this statistic. How many of the victims of "domestic violence" homicide by women are also women? And how many men were injuried by other men?

...”Adele Freeman fired five .38-caliber bullets into her boyfriend...”

Part of the problem is renaming attempted murder as domestic violence.

Some of the writers say “intimate partner violence.” Why having had sex with someone should mean you’re not going to shoot him, I don’t know ...

“Men” don’t call the poo leece when their spouses get out of hand, they attempt to deal with the situation in the home.
Then the poo leece are called on them.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are statistics.

What do you say to a woman with two black eyes?

Nothing. You have already told her twice.

Making jokes about domestic violence is really funny!

Jesus and I find hypocrisy extremely repulsive.

Speaking of God, do you know why He made Adam before Eve?

He did not need a woman standing around trying to tell Him how to make Adam!

If you can make light of shooting a man after sex, I can laugh at a woman getting slugged in the eye.

Unless of course, you are a complete hypocrite.

I pray that one day your gender as a whole will become mature enough to be held accountable for it’s double standards.

The facts have been out there ever since the first publication of Behind Closed Doors by Gelles and Strauss. Domestic violence follows the rule of halves right down the line:

Half of all heterosexual relationships are subject to domestic violence. In half of those the violence is unilateral, half is bilateral.

In the unilateral half, half the time the perp is male, and in half the perp is female.

In the bilateral half, half of the violence is instigated by the female, half by the male.

Strauss and Gelles did not investigate homosexual couples, but subsequent research has made clear that whether homosexual or lesbian, such relationships have domestic violence far in excess of heterosexual couples.

Your tagline, Remember to think.

I want you to think about why you (woman) can crack jokes about domestic violence and I (man) can’t. That may be the case if ALL domestic violence was committed by men on women, but both genders are equally responsible.

Double standards, situational ethics, moral absolutes, a.k.a. HYPOCRISY.

Hypocrisy is for liberals. Conservatives should only operate in absolute TRUTH.

You need to dial it back a bit, Mike.

The fact that you have misunderstood something I wrote as a response to someone else doesn’t give you the right to get on your little moral high horse and accuse me of bits of your fevered imagination. Sorry, dude, but you got it wrong.

You can rationalize your double standards any way you want.

I “misunderstood” your “joke” about shooting a man, and should not have had a problem with it.

You called me out on my “joke” about hitting a woman, maybe you just “misunderstood” it.

I have repeatedly pointed out your hypocrisy in this matter. The only imagination at work here is your egregious denial in accepting the truth.

I know that you meant no harm in your joke, and it was kind of funny. I baited you with my joke which was not really funny at all. I did not mean to attack you personally or make you mad.

I just wanted to make you think about it. I hear jokes all the time that if you replaced “man” with woman, black, or hispanic - it would get you fired on the spot.

abuse shelters generally do not take men or have some token facility that is beyond a mere joke.

Okay, here goes.

Since you are unable to justify your double standards in any way, your have resorted to pathetic attempts to project blame onto me. You accused me of “misunderstanding” your comment, and “putting my foot in my mouth”. Let me turn it up for you.

WHY CAN YOU MAKE JOKES ABOUT SHOOTING A MAN, BUT I CANNOT MAKE JOKES ABOUT HITTING A WOMAN?

Unless you are ready to address the real issue here, you should stop typing. Your feeble attempts at criticizing me just make you look juvenile.

You should run for office as a liberal democrat. Your skills at projection and misdirection while ignoring the real issue would come in handy.

If you want to prove my point, just keep up coming with more inane jabs at me.

Suzy - if you ever pull your head out of your...um, butt, maybe you will see what a hypocrite you are.
