Barney Frank: Straight and Gay Soldiers Must Shower Together, But Not Men and Women

Barney Frank: Straight and Gay Soldiers Must Shower Together, But Not Men and Women Tuesday, December 21, 2010 By Nicholas Ballasy

(CNSNews.com) - Rep. Barney Frank (D.-Mass.) says he agrees with the recommendation of a Department of Defense (DOD) working group that straight and gay military personnel of the same gender should be required to shower together when the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law goes into effect.

Frank, however, said Armed Forces personnel of opposite sexes should not shower together.

“What do you think happens in gyms all over America? What do you think happens in the House of Representatives? Of course people shower with homosexuals. What a silly issue. What do you think goes wrong with showering with homosexuals? Do you think the spray makes it catching? I mean people shower with homosexuals in college dormitories, in gyms where people play sports; in gyms elsewhere. It is a complete non-issue. ” Frank told CNSNews.com.

CNSNews.com then asked Frank why he thinks it is a non-issue.

“To accept the principle that homosexuals can’t shower with other people is a degree of discrimination that goes far beyond this. We don’t get ourselves dry cleaned. We tend to take showers when we go to the gym; when we play sports,” he responded.

Rep. Frank continued, “The notion that knowing that someone is gay or lesbian as opposed to knowing that they are gay or lesbian people that have to pretend who they are; that that somehow makes a difference is pretty silly,”

Frank was also asked if he thinks male and female military personnel should be able to shower together.

“No that would disrupt people,” he said.

We know what happens — the male pages get molested.

The truth of the matter is, there is no explanation that makes sense why men and women should not shower together or even sleep in the same room, if homosexuals shower together and sleep in the same room, unless you can somehow make the case that homosexuals are somehow different than heterosexuals when it comes to sexual behavior. Do they want to make that case?

“required” to shower together??? So, like they're going to make it a “rule”? I'll shower with whomever and whenever I like, Rep. Frank. I really don't think we need to make it a requirement, do we? Communal showers are provided it appears, and showers are somewhat mandatory, I presume, so just take the frigging€™ shower when you need one and...seriously? “required€????...and call it a day for the love of God.

Its a bad question. I’d like to ask if congressmen share a two man tent together, do tick checks on one another, huddle together for warmth, etc.

The bottom line is - the military doesn’t need this distraction. I predict that a year from now, when the NYT tries to do its ‘A Year After the Repeal’ story, they will be hard pressed to find half a dozen soldiers serving as openly gay.

Gay people don’t want to serve openly in the military. Gay people, who aren’t presently in the military, think its a great idea for others to serve openly...but they would never do it themselves.

I think he has shower facilities confused with "bath houses".

It is "discrimination" if heterosexuals are not allowed to shower with THEIR sex partners, in light of the sex deviates' priveledge, isn't it? This amounts to "preferential treatment" for a certain group, while the other group doesn't have the same "benefit".

“Report of the Comprehensive Review of the Issues Associated with a Repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’” --that permitting heterosexuals to use separate showers, bathrooms and bunking facilities from homosexuals of the same gender would “stigmatize” homosexuals and be “reminiscent of ‘separate but equal’ facilities for blacks prior to the 1960s.”

What a crock! Are women stigmatized when they have to shower and sleep separate from men? People are segregated by sex every freakin' day.. It's Nothing like racial segregation blacks went through!

When they shower at the gym, they then LEAVE the gym. They don’t go back to the barracks where they have to sleep in the next bunk over from the person. It IS different.

What is unclear to me is what follows the repeal of DADT. I assume that the gays are not thinking that we go back to the policy in place before DADT.

What is actually needed now is MAMT. Must Ask-Must Tell.

If gays want to serve openly - let’s make sure they do. Then folks can KNOW who they are showering alongside, and more importantly who they are fighting alongside.

Intense physical training remains a "job requirement" long after bootcamp. During my pre-retirement 20 years, I never saw a military gym shower that was anything other than open bay.

To be fair, I don't know about female facilities.

I think there’s a different way to frame this that might get closer to the real issue.

Men and women don’t share facilities merely because they might be sexually attracted to each other. Really, it’s about privacy. Women don’t want to bathe in front of men, and vice versa, and in fact, most men would rather not bathe in front of women. Whether they might be sexually interested in each other is only part of it.

The question really should be: if we’re going to be fair to gays, shouldn’t they deserve privacy from other gays when they shower? And how’s that supposed to work?

Simple solution.

File Sexual Harassment lawsuits each time a homosexual ogles a straight man or woman in the shower.

Use their own PC laws against them.

From the UCMJ on Sexual Harrassment:

Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when:

Involves a person’s job, pay or career:
Basis for employment decision
Interferes with performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment.

Hostile environment sexual harassment occurs when unwelcome sexual conduct unreasonably interferes with an individual’s job performance or creates a hostile, intimidating or offensive work environment even though the harassment may not result in tangible or economic job consequences, that is, the person may not lose pay or a promotion. Employers, supervisors, coworkers, customers, or clients can create a hostile work environment.

You obviously didn’t serve in the Marine Corps and likely not even in the infantry. I can understand how the average pogue might see things from your position, but infantry Marines work, fight, and live together. In many cases, especially during war (and yes, I served in Iraq), this also includes showering together.

But the biggest problem with this is not just gays and straights showering together. This will put open homosexuals in command of those they are sexually attracted to and see naked on a regular basis. For instance, take a DI in boot camp who often sees recruits running around naked (yes, this happens in Marine Corps boot camp). How does this NOT create a hostile working environment?
