Yeah, I'm thinking late 50s.
I've lost count how many times I've seen 'A Christmas Story', although I don't claim to be an authority on the movie. However, I'm pretty sure that when Ralphie gets his new Little Orphan Annie secret decoder pin, it has the date "1940" stamped on it.
Ahead of his time....he would have joined the New Obama Army, where he can practice openly now.
Bingo!

“40’s check out the cars”
Yep, late 40s - always check the cars. The story was set in Hammond, IN with Cleveland used as the physical location in the movie.
In the interview Peter/Ralphie sez its during the depression ... but me thinks the late 40s must have only seemed grim to a child like Peter born in the 70s.
Born in Chicago during the 40s, I grew up in a rural area down state - 2 miles from Indiana. I remember those hated snow suits, my brothers had Red Ryder B-B guns. Ralphie’s dad and my brothers were Bear fans. This movie does a great job capturing the time and place.
I did not know that ,good for him.
Near as I can figure:
1940-1941, on the eve of WWII.
He’s still cute.
Whenever the “Wizard of Oz” came out - that’s the year it was set. (Maybe the year after - but the WoO was obviously still big and new and being heavily promoted).
That guy in the lower left corner...isn’t that John Hillerman/Higgins from Magnum PI?
Thanks for the info. What little I know of Jon Favreau, he seems like an okay guy. Swingers was a great movie. I wish he was onboard for Iron Man 3.
1947, as I recall.
The people saying 1940 may be right. I don't remember the part about license plates and Wizard of Oz signs, but I thought I read a long time ago that it was supposed to be 1947, post war, pre TV.
I remember him being on at 11. And not Sunday only but every day? Not sure about every day. I was part of the listening under the covers crowd. He used to play the nose flute and did the commercials for Volvo himself.
He did a one-man show at the Orpheum on Second Avenue, where Stomp is now. At the end of the show he said he was going across the street to Ratner’s, a Jewish dairy deli, and we could all go with him. Many of us did.
I’m surprised this show does not appear on the Wikipedia site. Forgot the name of the show.
