TACOMA — A Washington man who was briefly jailed last year for violating a state court order that he stop offering zip-line rides (snip) is now in trouble with the federal government.
The U.S. Attorneys Office sued Derek Hoyte this week in federal court in Tacoma, saying the U.S. Forest Service recently confirmed reports that Hoyte has reinstalled zip lines on the property and is constructing a suspension bridge without permission.
The Forest Service says Hoyte has built roads and cut trees on an 80-acre parcel he owns near Washougal in violation of a conservation easement the government obtained from the previous owners of the property. Prosecutors are seeking a restraining order and asking that Hoyte be forced to compensate the government for damage to the land and pay triple damages for any lumber he cut.

I hear ya. I’m not going to do it either, but I do see some real problems on the horizon.
The Police State is now complete. His grandfather would have been charged with kidnapping, oodles of gun charges, attempted murder, and a sackload of whatever our masters could throw at the wall & make stick.
Gramps would have been lucky to get out in 20 years.
Last year, I got pulled over in a residential neighborhood. I stopped my car immediately, then realized that I was blocking a guy's driveway. I pulled forward a little bit to clear the driveway, and the officer stormed up to my window. "WHY DID YOU MOVE YOUR CAR TOWARD ME?"
Say what? I explained that I was blocking another peasant's driveway. That seemed to settle him down a little - but I still got to share the wealth.
Later, I realized that they teach 'em in Lawdog School nowadays that the peasants are always "threatening" them somehow. I was probably lucky I wasn't up on charges for "assaulting a peace officer".

If true, this guy is a fool and has not a leg to stand on.
They guy apparently bought the property knowing there was an easment on it already. The previous owners sold out -- unless they were coerced. Nonetheless, the new owner bought the land knowing he would have to abide by the easment.
Exactly, if people her are really concerned with property rights, this guy like the rest of us only gets the rights he purchased. And the property price likely reflected the easement.
I became confused when I heard the word ” Service” used with these agencies:

State, City, County & Public ‘ Service ‘
Customer ‘ Service ‘
Agricultural Service
This is not what I thought Service “meant”.
But today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had hired a bull to’ Service ‘ all his cows.
BAM!!! It all came into focus. Now I understand what all those agencies are doing to us.

The Feds don’t like it when you break a contact with them and the Feds have lots of lawyers.
Cops scare the living spit out of me. Don’t trust them at all. I consider them armed, dangerous, on a hair trigger and looking for a reason to pull it.
You are lucky not to be up on charges for APO or resisting.
Try to pull over in a lighted area or out of the traffic and see what you get. Last summer two of the states finest stopped me for an expired safety inspection sticker. You would have thought they were stopping John Dillinger. County road and the big truck so I pulled over in a ditch to see what they would do... blocked the whole dang road is what they did then crept up along the side of the truck from each side.
Morons.
Back in ‘42 when most of the sheriff’s deputies had been drafted, a guy moved into our neighborhood. He wasn’t a real nice guy and his wife kept showing up at the general store with bruises and cuts so everyone figured he was a bad ‘un but it was a family matter. When the word went out that he was sleeping with his own daughter though, opinions changed rapidly.
I was only eight years old then but I remember the meeting in our living room of all the men in the neighborhood. My mom ouldn’t let me listen in but I knew something was up. The whole bunch of them left and later when dad came back alone he was very quiet. He never drank much but that night he took a bottle out of the cupboard and sat on the porch, drinking and smoking.
It was dark but I knew the trails around there like the back of my own hand so I talked a neighbor kid into coming with me and we slipped up on the badguy’s house from the woods. His wife and kids were gone with the car and he was hanging from a tree. The next day the sheriff showed up and declared it a suicide.
Ok, ok. I’m just a city slicker. What is a “zip ride”?

I was looking into Alaska land a while back so I did some research - reading and communicating with some people and realtors there.
Although Alaska is huge in terms of land area only a relatively small portion is viable as rural or country homesteads. The federal government “owns” about 65% of the land in the state, much of which is land that was traditionally homesteaded or just squatted on.
From what I gather it is now almost impossible to find homestead or rural land in Alaska anymore as the Feds have stopped most (nmaybe all) homesteading and squatting. They have also been running people off many of the old hometeaded parcels and preventing transfer to new owners when the original or present resident dies or moves out.
I know we have some Alaska residents here on Free Republic who can provide more detail and more accurate info but the bottom line seems to be that it’s not easy to find land outside of cities and towns.
In WWII this technique was fairly common because of the difficulty in obtaining gasoline. How to build and operate these wood gas converter powered vehicles is just another skill that has been almost lost over the years. There is a lot of info on the net in addition to the Mother Earth article.

To play devil's advocate for a moment, "property" and "use of that property" are two different things. I can't erect a business, and many other things on my land, if it isn't zoned for it. Doesn't mean the property isn't mine or to do with as I please, generally speaking.
If Mr. Hoyte signed a contract agreeing to the stipulations that the previous owner enacted, then he is obliged by that contract to cease and desist the activities that he is engaged in.
