Court Decision Gives GOP Control of Senate

The state's highest court ruled in the final disputed State Senate race in the seventh district on Long Island, and the decision means Republicans will once again control the Senate in January.

The Court of Appeals agreed with two lower court decisions, and denied Democratic Senator Craig Johnson, a recount in his race against GOP challenger Jack Martins. Johnson had been trailing by 451 votes.

The case is also important because it is the first time the State's high court has had to issue a ruling on the recounting of ballots under the new optical scan voting machines, used statewide for the first time in November. Unlike the old levered machines, the new system includes a paper trail of individual ballots that could theoretically be counted one by one.

Thia is good news, especially in light of Cuomo winning the election for governor.

At least a small bulwark against a screwing over redistricting in NY.

Good, maybe they can redistrict Louise Slaughter’s lilly white arse or of her majority minority gerrymandered seat.

She is simply one of the most vile democRATS.

Yes, it only affects the NY senate.

NY re-elected Schumer and Gillibrand.

Ugh....

Lots of bad elections all around. We got Patsy Murray (reputedly the dimmest bulb in the pack — and that’s a D.C. assessment!) again. So sorry for y’all.

“Small” is right. In NY the GOP is nearly as corrupt as the rats.
It’s very similar to New Jersey and California where the GOP is little more than a stealth wing of the rat party.

Patsy Murray is stupid as a brick alright, but nobody is as stupid as Barbara Boxer. Nobody.

Considering that, I think NY did fairly well with the exception of the US Senators and governor.

I was thrilled with Buerkle winning the House seat in CNY. Thanks for the condolences. Too many FReepers blame us for what we get and say we deserve it. If only we could get rid of NYC....

We're in the same boat. I live in "King County" (forever officially named for a gay slave-owner, but now for MLK) and the corrupt leftist center of Washington State second only to Olympia WA and Rachel Corrie's "Evergreen State College.".

Cut the rest of the state away from Seattle and Olympia and we'd be a solid red state.

Lets have a “battle royal” of mental midget wrestling. I have to go with Tennis Shoe Murray, as she “represents” me, although Boxer will indeed be strong competition. And we can’t forget Sheila Jackson Lee, the brain trust of the House. Feel free to offer your own contenders for what will certainly be a large and formidable field

Even given the NY State GOP's limitations, it's better than the democrats running things, especially since I believe the legislature has a significant role in redistricting the congressional districts and NY State lost 2 congressional seats in the latest census.

We'll take it any way we can get it, especially in NY State where the GOP did terribly in statewide offices, and it looks like even in a big GOP year, that kind of momentum doesn't really help much in pathologically liberal states like NY.

Bunk headline. Sour grapes from the lefty “news” people, I suppose.

My nominee would have to be Congressman Hank Johnson of Georgia. With a straight face during a recent Congressional hearing this guy, while “interrogating” a Naval Officer, expressed his personal concern that by adding 25,000 naval personnel to the island’s population, Guam was likely to “turn over.” But then he replaced Cynthia McKinney, so he’s in good company.

I am getting sick of these liberal ass-hats and their misleading headlines intentionally written to mislead.

No court decision gave the GOP control of the senate. The voters of the State of NY gave the GOP control of the senate.

WXXI is public TV and Radio...PBS...otherwise known as the US version of Pravda. Just a bunch of state funded propagandists.

This is very good news. Republicans made impressive gains in Congress, nearly all of them in upstate New York.
