A 55-year-old tradition continues this year as the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, launches its Santa Tracker at 2 a.m. EST on Christmas Eve, with help from Google Earth.

The comments from some of the regular "readers" are funny. It is amazing to me that people this clueless can manage to feed and clothe themselves without assistance.

I remember 1962! We had just had the Cuban Missile Crisis and were really on edge.
Christmas eve, just as I was heading for bed, the newsman broke for a news flash! NORAD had picked up on radar something incoming over the DEW Line!

I stopped in my tracks! Was it a Russian missile attack? WERE WE AT WAR?

Then they showed a still of a Santa Clause sleigh with fake clouds moving across it! I was Pi$$ed (and relieved)! This was no time to give such a warning after what we had been through a few months before!

I still don’t care for the NORAD warnings each Christmas eve! It is kind of like mistaking Japanese planes for American unarmed bombers in 1941.

Hmm, 2 AM EST would be 12 AM MST - NORAD is in Colorado Springs, right? Seems to me if Santa started at the international date line, he’d already be well on his way. Or wait a minute... I never was very good at figuring out when/where today became tomorrow...

Isn’t this a government recognition of Christ?

Whatever would Nina Totenberg think?

Santa is the only illegal alien we can track. Will the TSA be there when he touches down on 1 American house?

A lot of those people writing comments really need to get lives. Instead of having some fun and Christmas cheer, they rather complain about NORAD. What a bunch of Scrooges.

I’m surprised that the START Treaty didn’t ban such intrusions into Santa sovereignty

It really is amazing to read what some of those idiots were writing about NORAD and 9/11.

These booger eating morons claimed that NORAD wasn’t tracking the hijacked planes, and that they didn’t “scramble” fighters to shoot down the planes... On the morning of September 11, 2001, the USA was not on a war footing. We didn’t have armed fighter jets patrolling the skies over Washington and NYC. Oh, and what do these idiots believe would have happened when a jet airliner was shot out of the sky over DC or NYC? Does it just disappear in a puff of smoke? Poof!

Mark

Must be rather exciting if you are a kid.

Long may the tradition continue.

The guys at NORAD are human beings, too. They are dads, brothers, and sons. And it is nice they give the kiddies a thrill. Oh, the magic of Christmas! Have a Merry one, for He came to give us life everlasting if we just believe in Him.

During the 80’s I was an Air Traffic Controller stationed in West Berlin. I can remember the local Armed Forces TV coming out to the Berlin Air Route Traffic Control Center, the facility that worked aircraft in and out of the Berlin corridors, doing regular uptakes on Santa flight.
