Sheriff Joe Arpaio Holds Prison-Wide Christmas Caroling Contest

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is famous, to put it somewhat euphemistically, for thinking outside the pen when it comes to punishing his state’s criminals. Now the man who made headlines for making inmates don pink underwear is in the news yet again, this time for organizing a caroling contest among inmates, with the most angelic rendition of “All I Want for Christmas is You” winning a festive Christmas dinner.

Arpaio has drawn criticism — not to mention a few lawsuits — for another Christmas tradition he’s enforced: piping holiday songs into prison cells for twelve hours a day, including those by one of his favorite musical acts — Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Fox News’ Rick Folbaum has a bit of sage advice for this year’s participants:

Recidivism in the Sheriff Joe prison is less than the national average so he must be doing something right. If pink undies, Christmas carols and baloney sandwiches work then so be it.

I read somewhere that he turned to the pink underwear because the inmates were stealing large quantities of regular underwear.

Other sherriffs no doubt have the same problem, but just order more and more, and charge it to the taxpayers.
