Spies are not treated kindly by anyone. Manning betrayed his own plea for equality by betraying his country.

Not all spies are traitors. To be a traitor one must not only betray his oath, he must place information with which he is entrusted into the hands of his country's enemies. That, I believe, qualifies Manning as both spy and traitor.
