In Congress, A Harder Line On Illegal Immigrants
NPR ^ | 12-26-2010 | AP

Posted on 12/26/2010 11:49:11 AM PST by radpolis

In a matter of weeks, Congress will go from trying to help young, illegal immigrants become legal to debating whether children born to parents who are in the country illegally should continue to enjoy automatic U.S. citizenship.

Such a hardened approach — and the rhetoric certain to accompany it — should resonate with the GOP faithful who helped swing the House in Republicans' favor. But it also could further hurt the GOP in its endeavor to grab a large enough share of the growing Latino vote to win the White House and the Senate majority in 2012.

Legislation to test interpretations of the 14th Amendment as granting citizenship to children of illegal immigrants will emerge early next session. That is likely to be followed by attempts to force employers to use a still-developing web system, dubbed E-Verify, to check that all of their employees are in the U.S. legally.

The worst thing that has happened to Americans of hispanic descent is illegals. There are a few that have made money off exploiting illegals but the majority have seen the damage that has been done by illegals.

I actually believe that a hard line approach is politically better for the GOP than a pandering, supplicating approach, despite what the liberal propagandists in the media spew

Depending on which poll numbers you use, 70% to 80% of Americans are opposed to illegal immigration. Those numbers also (more or less) run across all demographics.

Any dolt ought to be able to see that bucking that trend is a losing political strategy.

My spouse is of Spanish parents but was born in Brazil and grew up in S Africa. When talk centers on illegal immigration, she is always the most hard-nosed least sympathetic kick em out now enforce legal immigration policy supporter. She sees our non-enforcement as corrosive to our survival.

She would make a very dynamic great public office candidate, if only she would consider US citizenship more urgently. She has a love for this country, understands its role in promoting freedom for all mankind but is still comfortable as a legal resident.

I will have to work on her some more!

Statement: "In Congress, A Harder Line On Illegal Immigrants"

Response: Many brave words will be uttered with chest tones of deep conviction, study groups formed, discussion, debate, different points of view shall be expressed on the "topic". Billions in ad revenue will be made by media conglomerates. In the meantime relity dictates that millions will pour over the border and the taxpayer will pick up the expense and politicians the Mexican votes.(Plus Mexican drug money!)

“Boo hoo. I’m crying so hard I can barely type.”

Yeh me too. Its just not FAIR to talk about keeping anchor babies from being automatic US citizens. Just not FAIR at all and its not NICE either.

Birthright citizenship is the ace in the hole for ILLEGAL ALIENS to LEGALLY collect state and federal benefits. It may be a bigger magnet to this country than jobs and drains the system for years on end. IT MUST END NOW.

Mine is from the Philippines. She doesn't like illegal immigration even a little bit.. We have had to jump through hoops, to do things legally, while the others simply walk across the border.

“John Morton, who oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in a recent conference call that there are no plans to change the agency’s enforcement tactics, which are focused on immigrants who commit crimes but also have led to detaining and deporting many immigrants who have not committed crimes.”

ILLEGAL aliens ARE criminals.

This is a stupid question. If your parents are here ILLEGALLY how can that possibly under any stretch of the imagination make you LEGAL? It cannot and it was never intended to do so.

Every poll I have seen on the subject has been over 90% and against “anchor babies”.

The operative phrase in the 14th Amendment is "subject to the jurisdiction thereof".

Those who say that the child of an alien is a "natural-born citizen", point to Calvin's Case [1608] from England concerning "natural-born subjects". BUT, Calvin's Case ALSO stated if that child was born to an enemy in England, then that child WAS NOT a "natural-born subject".

Now, in order for an alien in England [in 1608] NOT to be considered an enemy, that alien HAD to have leave of the Sovreign to be in the country in the first place. That is, an alien who was found to be in England WITHOUT the Sovreign's permission was AUTOMATICALLY an enemy since he was NOT under the Sovreign's jurisdiction.

And, any child born to him in England WAS NOT a subject of ANY kind.

Unless that “hard line” on illegal immigration involves the phrase “interlocking fields of fire” then it is too soft.

Seal the borders going into the USA and eliminate the carrot by severely punishing employers of illegals, and eliminating their social services and the problem will take care of itself.

I frankly don’t trust either Republicans or Democrats to take care of it just as they failed to fix it after 9-11.

Americans want it fixed and now.

Children born to parents who owe their allegiance to the U.S. are citizens. There is no law that grants citizenship to children of illegals, it is only a policy of the government. A policy that could be revoked with a simple vote of congress.

When your spouse cannot vote the liberals out who support Illegal Aliens (and other issues)....that will encourage your spouse to get citizenship. That was the main reason why my sister-in-law and her family (Canadian immigrants) became US citizens after years of putting it off

...........or simply forgot all about their visas as in overstayed.
Why didn’t “we” ever even think of this ?
Someone has to explain this to me.

So called "CRACKING DOWN ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION" the libs are whining about is just their ears perking up to that giant sucking sound of hundreds of thousands of potential social welfare-addicted, societal non-producer Democrat votes being sucked back south of the border, through deportation and attrition.

it is in fact, sweet, pure, true SOCIAL JUSTICE

It adheres to fair laws which treat all equal and make no extra or unbalanced consideration for anyone; it does not reward any form of lawbreaking, but adheres to order and pure fairness, for all must enter the US legally and orderly, no exceptions. This corrects injustices to those who patiently waited in line following the US procedures to legally come here, which are much more costly and much more timely to do so, but are honest, legal and guilt-free methodologies which God smiles upon, compared to arrogantly and disrespectfully coming in through stealth, lies, hiding, evasion and falsification.

Therefore, assailing those who illegally and immorally and dishonestly passed ahead of those who had quietly, patiently following the American Immigration law at varous Embassies and Consultates, is, the very essence of:

SOCIAL JUSTICE

American residence or citizenship: An EARNED PRIVILEGE based on LAW not a heaven-ordained inherent right based on ABJECT LAWLESSNESS.

Even my very liberal sisters are against illegal immigrants. They realize that they are only making it harder for the native born poor to get a chance for a better life.

“I think there is a distinction between the average American and the party and media elites.”

That is precisely the divide. Elites on both sides want amnesty, but rank-and-file Republicans and Democrats do not.

Why elites would harm our nation with open borders is an interesting question.
The elites love ‘bipartisanship’ when it suits them, but they dont want they ‘people’ to get their way on this.
