The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on Wednesday asked federal health officials to ensure that Catholic hospitals provide emergency reproductive care to pregnant women, saying the refusal by religiously affiliated hospitals to provide abortion and other services is an increasing problem.

In a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the ACLU cited the case of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, which was stripped of its Catholic status Tuesday because doctors performed an abortion on a woman with a life-threatening complication.

"We continue to applaud St. Joseph's for doing what is right by standing up for women's health and complying with federal law," five ACLU attorneys wrote in a letter to Donald Berwick, the CMS administrator, and his deputy. "But this confrontation never should have happened in the first place, because no hospital — religious or otherwise — should be prohibited from saving women's lives and from following federal law."

The letter was a follow-up to a complaint the ACLU sent in July asking for investigation of similar issues at Catholic hospitals across the country, including refusals to provide emergency contraception to rape victims or perform abortions on women having miscarriages.

"The dioceses cannot be permitted to dictate who lives and who dies in Catholic-owned hospitals," the letter states.

Would it then be too much to ask the president to follow the law and provide a birth certificate?

The Federal Government is the modern-day Tower of Babel.

How about if we Catholics pick up our assorted “implements of revol—er, restitution,” and abort the federal government? THAT would truly be an act of “reproductive care” ... we would then have saved America for future generations.

Don’t just remove the Catholic name, close them down entirely. Catholic hospitals are 1/4 of our health care system. If they want to play hardball, go Galt on them.

This of course great news for all socialist Catholics who voted for our socialist-in-chief. They should all be so proud with this news that now Catholic hospitals will be forced to murder the unborn.

It’s sad but so very true, we deserve the evil that is upopn us because we do nothing.

The ACLU is all about government force. Remember when they portrayed themselves as some kind of libertarian group?

Hmm, the ACLU reviews it's bigoted anti-Catholic side ~ again and again and again and again.

It is so tiresome.

They also hate babies. Every ACLU member is a threat to every child in the womb. Somehow we have to figure out how to get a permanent restraining order on them so they cannot come within 1/4 mile of a pregnant woman without being subject to sanction.

That statement is a complete oxymoron!

Can’t blame the Catholics if they choose to get out of the hospital biz altogether in the USA. This is vintage Obummer goonery.

This needs to be fought legitimately with the aid of every Pro-Life citizen in the Country.

Yeah, only moms who don’t want their kids can decide when it’s their time to die.

If the ACLU didn’t have its own head so far up its own ass, they would see the humungous hypocrisy in their own statements. Maybe even if they viewed their statements as coming from a conservative group, they’d rip their own statements to shreds.

I believe the names and addresses of the evil ACLU heirarchy and minions can be easily had. Anyone here who believes “something ought to really be done” about this anti-American organization with Marxist beginnings can quit bravely posting about it here and spend their time more productively in tangible solutions. Posting here accomplishes nothing.

As for the Catholic Church, they should sell every one of their hospitals if the ACLU pulls this off. My wife, a devout Catholic ER nurse at a Catholic hospital, would never betray her conscience for a pay check. She will quit the profession before acquiescing to Federally-ordered sin, and I think many others would as well.

The ACLU is using the government to impose a religious belief on Catholics. Atheism is a religious belief. Atheists can find no stronger argument for the non existence of God than Catholics and find an argument for his existence. In short believing in no God is a belief about religion. The government is violating the First Amendment by making laws based on ACLU beliefs on how Catholics are to run hospitals. It's clear the ACLU is against the First Amendment.
