California's 'cap-and-trade' escapade--Golden State pushes climate change over business climate
The Washington Times ^ | December 27, 2010 | Editorial

Posted on 12/28/2010 10:06:10 AM PST by jazusamo

The fact that the lame-duck Congress balked at endorsing "cap-and-trade" legislation didn't deter California from approving its own version of the extreme green scheme for restricting industrial emissions. The move bolsters the state's reputation as the left coast's home for ideas out of left field. Soon Americans will witness what happens when global-warming hysteria worsens an already sick economy.

California's Air Resources Board approved a cap-and-trade system on Dec. 16 that covers 360 businesses at 600 locations statewide. In its first phase, starting in 2012, electric utilities and other large manufacturers will receive free permits allowing emissions at their current levels. In the second phase, taking effect in 2015, refiners and distributors of gasoline, diesel, natural gas and other fuels will be required to buy emissions permits at auctions or purchase them from other companies. Gradually, the state will reduce the number of permits available, making them more expensive. To avoid exceeding their emissions limits, companies will be forced to develop dubious new methods of doing business.

Two inconvenient truths are getting in the way of the liberals' energy-free utopia. First, cap-and-trade is a solution in need of a problem; it's intended to remedy global warming while the earth is getting cooler. Second, the scheme is transparently a means of wealth redistribution that allows the political class to punish producers and reward the unsuccessful - a sure recipe for social dysfunction.

The body CA is hemorrhaging from a gash in the neck while the politicians are terribly concerned about a scratch on the thumb. Their concerns are bassackwards and the state will be bankrupt and kaput before too long. Green = idiocy.

I am beginning to believe that the “government” of PAUPERfornia is not that stupid. I am almost ready to accept a high degree of “malice aforethought” working its worst.
This CANNOT be classified as “unintended consequences.”

I fear the only real hope for California is that a huge number of the young go to the heartland or to the east and realize that you can live with lower taxation, and then go back demanding that California change.

I also hope to win $200 Million in the lottery tonight.

I left CA some time back. I well remember when they started the first vehicle emissions testing, it was a huge rip off. What’s taking place now makes that look like childs play.

If California had two brain cells to rub together, they would recognize that the answer to most of their fiscal woes lies just off their coast where an estimated 13 billion barrels of oil is waiting to be drilled. They could also seal their borders, and deport the huge under class of illegal aliens who are draining their state treasury and taxing resources and infrastructure. Then they would be in a good position to cut corporate and individual tax rates and start attracting productive people and businesses to the state instead of driving them out. That is the way you get unemployment to go down.

With this, I think another wave of California businesses into Texas is coming.

Governor Perry has done an outstanding job of recruiting businesses to Texas and I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes several more trips to California to do so.

California’s pain is Texas’ gain!

While the liberals’ “green economy” myth obliterates places like California, beacons of hope like Texas shall prosper.

As long as people put their trust in God, work hard and put a permanent parking brake on the government, there shall be continual prosperity!
