Ashland coke plant to close (Kentucky)
Ironton Tribune ^ | 12-28-10 | unattributed

AK Steel announced Tuesday it plans to close its Ashland, Ky., coke plant permanently in 2011, a decision that will affect its 263 employees.

Procedures for the closure will begin immediately and be completed early in the second quarter of 2011, according to a press release from the company.

------------------------------------------------------

Ray Finley, 54, of South Point, has been a contracted employee at the plant for the past three years. Finley blamed the Obama Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency for the closure.

“It’s sad that the federal government is going to let the American people starve,” while jobs go to China, he said.

The company said increased maintenance and increasingly stringent environmental regulations have made the plant, which produces the black furnace fuel for the company’s iron- and steelmaking facility, not cost competitive.

Praise Obama for saving us from evil pollution producing plants. 263 jobs is a small price to pay!

It’s just the beginning, the EPA is bound and determined to shut down the industrial output of the nation. They need to be put out of business ASAP while we have any industrial jobs at all.

Baraq added 17 million to the food stamp rolls his first two years, I wonder how the next two look?

True, but then I think about the last election and see that the folks in WV elected a Dem to the Senate. I worry that it will too late to turn any of this crap around.

Nowhere in this article is there any mention of the state fighting the Federal government. Unless the states take the lead collectively fighting the environmental extremist agenda of the EPA and the leftists running the rest of the Obama Administration, the US will devolve into a second world country in a few more years.

Well, Ky voted for the creep.

McCain carried Kentucky (and West Virginia), so I'm not sure what you mean by that.

For some reason, this story reminds me of the man from WV I met in 2008 while eating a at a diner counter who told me he was a Republican but was voting for BO. I very thoughtfully discussed how BO already said he would bankrupt the coal mines therefore running this guy and his family and friends out of business. He just wanted to feel so good about himself for voting for a black man. I had discussed how he had come out of nowhere and refused to release any information on himself and this man set his jaw and all but called me a racist. He paid for his breakfast and left. I left not far behind him and saw him unlocking his car. I said, “Excuse me!!!”, and ran up to him. I told him that I would probably never see him again and I meant this with all respect but I wanted him to think of me in the near future and to take these words with him. I then told him, “I told you so”. I hated to be a bitch and he was a gentleman but his entire reasoning about voting for BO was almost a mental illness.

I wonder if he has ever remembered our conversation.

And I wonder if anyone who voted for him and has lost everything or will in the future takes a long look at themselves and how their own stupidity has cost them so much.

It's treason to allow part of our vital industrial infrastructure to be shipped abroad.

US Representative Geoff Davis (4th District - KY) has served our country with the 82nd Airborne, so HE'S obviously not the problem.

I think the problem lies with the First Muslim and his Greenie snakes in the EPA.

Actually, I think I meant WV, but I could be mistaken about the entire matter.

I don't know what it is about voting for Obama to feel good about yourself. I think some people have been brain washed in this country. I cannot comprehend electing someone that is obviously unqualified for an office.

I am absolutely sure the man has remembered your words on more than one occasion.

We pause to note the EPA spared the coke plant in Follansbee, WV, within the past couple weeks. (actually December 20, 2010, as I look it up.)

IIRC, they got a two year reprieve. Here’s a link with a few more details:

United States Steel Corp. Clariton coke plant, located in Clariton, PA. was scheduled for a ten year, 10 billion dollar upgrade. When the economy went Obama (south) they postponed the work. Clariton is about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh, on the Monongahela River.
A lot of rail and barge work will be lost, along with support services jobs in KY. 263 jobs will turn into 1000+.

Very sad!

if the paper did a little more digging, they’d find the met coal is being exported to China where it is turned into coke, and then sent back to the USA.
