Michele Bachmann, Neocon
The Weekly Standard ^ | Dec 31, 2010 | William Kristol

I didn't realize until I went off to college one day -- this is the honest to God truth -- I was going off to college, and I was reading this snotty novel. It was written by Gore Vidal, and I was maybe like a junior in college, or -- yeah, I think was maybe a junior in college. I was reading this snotty novel, and he was going after our Founders. And he was mocking them. And he was making fun out of them. . . . And at that point I put the book down and I laughed. I was riding a train. I looked out the window and I said, 'You know what? I think I must be a Republican. I don't think I'm a Democrat.'

I read Burr years ago but it didn't have that effect on me. I thought it was a great book. I enjoyed the whole series.

Other opinions on Burr?

Unlike most neocons, Michele Bachmann is a social conservative. Ergo, Michele Bachmann is not a neocon. Bill Krystal is wrong once again.

George W. Bush was a neocon, and was socially conservative (especially on matters such as abortion).

Damn! Another Democrat that switched. Does this mean Michelle Bachmann is not really a Republican? I am just asking because, I keep reading that we shouldn't trust these switchers.

Burr portrays Hamilton as a despicable individual who deserved to get killed and it portrays Washington as a buffoon.

While I appreciate Vidal's literary skill, it's clear that this was a work written as subtle anti-American propaganda every bit as much as it was written as "art."

I read Burr a very very long time ago, so I’m not sure the opinion I had of it then would be my opinion now. However, I do confess that I found it entertaining and cheeky, while not taking it too seriously as history.

I’m far more worried about the neoCOMS who are running the joint now.

Good piece. Thanks for posting.

Bachmann ranks right up there at the top of my list.

I like Bachmann too. She’s learned a lot about handling the press since I’ve been following her. Sign of an intelligent mind.

She was ever a democrat POLITICIAN, is the point. She grew up in a democrat family.

Neocons like to define themselves as enlightened former Democrats. Others find the term more precise in the sense of ‘hawks who are otherwise still Democrats’.

I’m a former Dem (yes, I was an idiot in my youth) who is not close to being a ‘Bill Krystal Republican’.

You have to wonder if he is trying to split the camp... cause I was thinking the same thing

I like your logic!

Now let me try a little of my own logic:

1. Bill Kristol is a bad guy -- a phoney and a fake who's not to be trusted.

2. Bill Kristol approves of Michelle Bachmann's conversion from Democrat to Republican.

Ergo,

3. Michelle's conversion experience was phoney.

Ergo redux,

4. Michelle is not to be trusted.

How does this article say anything about her being a neocon? I thought neocons (GW Bush variety) were for big government and invading countries in the name of “democracy.”

It is not fair to describe the episode related here as a conversion experience. She was in college. She hadn’t yet formed a political point of view that could be converted.

What about Bachman's support of Roy Blunt (sp?) in Missouri? I heard Tea Partier's express concern about his "business-as-usual" risk, and discouraging Bachman from endorsing him. But, she did anyhow.

My question is, is Blunt the same sort of Country-clubbing Repub, (how on earth did Murkowski get in - what a sham and shame) that has been half the problem here, or is he of the principled people? And, so did Bachman just support the winning candidate versus the principled one?

In this game, it seems that a fake conservative can endorse all the "right" and principled candidates, but also support the spoiler...who can vote for the terrible Supreme Court candidates in the name of "not being mean" or vote for DADT ban lifting, etc.

Finally, does someone know Bachmans stance on the Food Safety Act, which is a government expander? Didn't she vote for that? If food control is a key plank of eventual control of America, wouldn't it matter if she voted for something like that?

I'm just wondering out loud. She seems pretty real, and I like her a lot, but I want to make sure she's the real deal.

It’s important to keep wondering. It is a sad truth that politicians all seem to evolve when they get to D.C. and they all evolve in the wrong direction. You can NEVER take your eyes off them.

A neocon is one who wants Americans to fight all over the world while shipping their jobs all over the world.
