This is really odd? I'm not buying the lightning story. If that was the case, then we would see it more often. After all lightening happens all the time. It would not be an anomaly. Can anyone else ever recall this happening before? Ditto the disease fish. Very odd indeed.

Reports are just beginning to come in. We should hear about dead mammals and reptiles, especially frogs and turtles. Unless this is in an area with no people there should also be reports of human deaths. It sound like a massive gas bubble. Is there a major lake in the area?

“The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said it suspected disease was to blame for the death of the drum fish...”
Disease wouldn’t send them all belly up in a short time span, and the birds reveal their is more to this than that explaination.

The commission said that New Year's Eve revellers shooting off fireworks in the area could have startled the birds from their roost and caused them to die from stress. What an ignorant statement. Perhaps stupid is a better description of that part of the statement.
How many PETA persons are on the commission?

I can remember being near Stuttgart, AR (major rice production area), back in the 1990s during winter when it seemed to rain game birds. Seems there was a very violent thunderstorm coupled with rice fields where the migratory birds flew over and fed. Long story short, there were thousands of dead birds in the rice fields. Not so unusual.

Well I do believe that’s possible as I’ve seen authorites use fireworks to rid flocks of nusance birds from buildings. I worked at a huge mall where large flocks of birds would lite. You’d leave work and see the sky black with them. They set off fireworks from the mall roof throughout the day...all Mall employees were informed so we wouldn’t be alarmed at the sounds of the “bombs” going off...which is what they sounded like throughout the day. More than a few of these pests died.

Still does not explain the issue. The pic shows red-wing blackbird, or maybe a tricolor.

That would sure solve the lead shot problems... just don’t load any shot and let the report of the shotgun scare them to death.
That really is a remarkably stupid explanation, isn’t it?

Now.... frogs falling out of the sky is another matter.
And as impossible as that may seem, it also happens.

There is some speculation that a caldera might exist under western Arkansas going into Oklahoma, in the area of the Arkansas River Valley.
Since drum fish are bottom feeders, they would be susceptible to seepage of toxic gases through the river bottom.
