FRANKLIN - U.S. Rep. Mike Pence is scheduling Republican Lincoln Days Dinner all over Indiana, Howey Politics Indiana has learned.
It is the best clue yet that he is preparing to launch a 2012 Indiana gubernatorial campaign, as opposed to seeking the presidency. "He is scheduling larger counties," a Republican source told HPI on Monday.
"If he is running for President, it would be an interesting and novel strategy. We could call it the Win Indiana Strategy!"
If Pence were to launch a presidential campaign, he would be more likely to spend this winter and spring in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina - the key early primary and caucus states.
Pence spokesman Matt Lloyd told HPI over the weekend that the congressman has not scheduled any media events to announce future plans. The GOP field cleared just before Christmas when Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman announced she would not run due to "minor health problems."

It would be a good thing for Indiana, and a great move for Pence, BUT I sure hate to lose him in the House!!
It means
RINO’s Team will be: Mitt, Newt, Thune, Pawlenty(somewhat), Mitch, Trump (if he is serious- he probably leans liberal on social issues)
Foreign policy Team: Bolton
Conservative/Tea Party: Palin, Herman Cain
*note* Huck is not included as of right now because based on his schedule for summer of 2011 - He might not be running, some say his wife wants out of the political run
Praise God! This is the smartest, shrewdest move Mike Pence can make. Instead of letting himself be used as a stop Palin stooge, he is preparing himself by running for governor — a statewide executive office. After serving as governor, he will be the best candidate for president conservatives can have because the elites and RINOs won’t be able to use his lack of executive experience and lack of statewide office against him.
IIRC, he is the father of three, with the eldest a student at Purdue.
I don’t know the ages of his children, but I think his wife and children maintain their residence in Indiana, so presumably he’s aiming to run for governor.
And the “Anybody but Sarah” crowd is deeply saddened!
It’s good for him.....and yes, he wont be used as a stooge for PDS haters who would just use him to split the primary votes and nothing more.
Interesting. My gut feeling on this one is that Pence still has Presidential ambitions. As governor, he’ll add executive branch experience to his lengthy resume from his time in the House.
Of course Pence has higher ambition for the Presidency - but it will not come in 2012 - he has no executive experience, once he gets that done governing the state of Indiana very well then he will be prepared
In my opinion we could right the ship with Palin,Herman & Bolton.
It would be worth it just to help exit Lugar.
Yep, very sharp move by Pence. It’s just almost impossible to make that leap from the House to the WH. The governor’s mansion is definitely the best route to take.
I would hate to lose him as a Presidential candidate.
Perhaps Mr.Pence will not have a succesfull experience as Governor of Indiana. IMHO, Mr.Daniels, with all his professional skills, will be a tough act to follow.
As a new Governor, being the number one guy, constantly criticised by the upstate gang in South Bend plus the uncertain future that Obama has set in motion, may expose weaknesses of Mr.Pence. No hiding out in Congress as just one of many.
Is Bayh a possible player for the Indiana Governors office?
I’m not sure about the Governor thing. It might be true, and would be a prudent career move for him if he does have designs on the presidency. But the Lincoln Day event is sort of interesting because Lincoln only ever held a House seat before becoming POTUS. Of course it could just be wishful thinking because I really like his politics.
This Hoosier would be thrilled to have Mike Pence run for governor!
This is going to break pissant’s heart.
No. I’m quite confident that even if Pence runs for Guv (my sources tell me he’s leaning to POTUS) there will be a couple of genuine conservative running. In fact, I hope Pence does run for Guv, because then DeMint is far more likely to run for Prez.
