'Abstinent' teens test positive for STDs
Washington Times ^ | 1/3/2011 | Cheryl Wetzstein

More than 10 percent of teens who said they were abstinent also tested positive for a sexually transmitted disease, says a study in Pediatrics released Monday — a figure public health advocates say justifies screening all teens for such diseases.

Study author Jessica McDermott Sales, a research assistant professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at Emory University, said STD screenings should happen, regardless of what they say about their sexual histories.

"These infections can have some pretty major consequences for young people … . It's worth the urine test," she said.

The study was based on data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health ("Add Health"), which has tracked thousands of teens and young adults for more than a decade.

In Wave 3 of Add Health, about 14,000 youth agreed to provide a urine specimen to check for three STDs — gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis.

More than 11,000 of these youth said they had had sexual intercourse in the last 12 months, while the remaining 3,000 youth reported no sexual intercourse during that time.

The STD tests came back positive for 964 youth.

The vast majority of these STD results occurred in youth who said they had had sexual intercourse in the last year.

But 118 youth who denied having sexual intercourse also tested positive for an STD. In fact, 60 of these young people said they had never had sexual intercourse in their lives.

Sounds like a few of those teens may have been using the Clinton definition of sex...

Was this an oral test?

Was this an oral test?

In the Clintonian lexicon, that means it wasn't a test after all.

Almost all STD’s need genital to genital contact to transmit. But while yes, some sort of “gray area” of contact without penetration may have (possibly) been the culprit - I find it FAR MORE LIKELY that they (gasp!) LIED.

People lie about sex.

An amazing revelation to some, to be sure. But there it is.

People lie about sex.

Who knew that teens lied???

This is about what you can expect when parents turn their responsibilities for teaching their children over professors at Emory Univ.

Many teens today believe that if it is not vaginal intercourse, it isn’t sex. Thank you, Mr. Clinton.

True but Trichomoniasis can pass woman to woman through anything wet/damp including a toilet seat. I worked in a clinic for a while and there was a 11YO girl that got it from her 15yo hosebag sister.

11,000 out of 14,000 “abstinant” teens had sex in the last 12 months? That’s a strange definition of abstinance.

Blood to blood contact (body fluid to body fluid) transmits almost any of them also.

But not much blood to blood contact with oral sex, unless you are doing it horribly wrong!

And not much blood to blood contact with vaginal sex either.

That is one of the reasons why AIDS ran rampant in the homosexual community - anal sex is much more likely to involve blood.

I think the math is wrong here.

14000 in the study. 11,000 admit to having sex. 3000 claim no sex for previous year.
964 test positive. Of these, 846 admitted to having sex, and 118 with an STD claimed to have avoided all sex.

So, of 3000 people claiming to have been abstinent, 118 had an STD. And the lead is that more than 10% of the teens claiming to be abstinent had an STD??

Let's try again with some emphasis.

Two things to consider

First:

Up to 60% of all US teens have HPV so if 10% of Teens who tout abstinence do not then there is something significant.

Of course not all teens who claim abstinence follow through but if they are doing 50% better than teens who do that that proves ‘they are not all going to do it anyway’

Second:

As someone else pointed out schools and media have tried to redefine ‘sex’ by limiting it to the strictly penetrative test.

In fact Sex is so much more and some might think ‘this is not really sex’...

Reading the article, it says:
* The study included about 3000 people who said they had been abstinent within the past year.
* Of those who said they had been abstinent for the past year, 118 of the participants tested positive.

That seems closer to 4% than 10%.

Under Bubba’s definition, they puffed but did not inhale. They just told their parents they were abstinant. The problem with many of today’s youth and parents are that they are ‘friends’ rather than having a true parent/child relationship. My upbringing was strict, but I was taught the limits and the difference between right and wrong. How we felt was really never an issue. When my parents made a ruling it was followed or punishments were doled out. Spankings were not uncommon, but during later years taking away ‘currency’ was very effective. It was up to my parents to decide what the currency was. Spending time with friends, phone time, using the car, etc were all priveleges that could be taken away very easily. The problem with kids these days is that their parents are too soft and allow the children to play one parent against the other. Society has shifted from necessities and luxuries to ‘I want it, so I have to have it’. Earning money and saving it for something you wanted or needed is a concept that is lost on society today. They do not understand what real hardship is.
