State officials say they are investigating a "very large" fish kill in the Chesapeake Bay, but suspect cold temperatures killed them, rather than any water-quality problems.
An estimated 2 million fish have been reported dead from the Bay Bridge south to Tangier Sound, according to the Maryland Department of the Environment, which investigates fish kills. The dead fish are primarily adult spot, with some juvenile croakers.
Agency spokeswoman Dawn Stoltzfus said bay water quality appears acceptable, and biologists believe "cold-water stress" the likely cause of the fish kill. Spot are susceptible to colder water, she said, and normally leave the upper bay by now. Water temperatures plummeted in late December to near-record lows for that time of year, about 36 degrees. The average air temperature last month was 32.4 degrees, 4.3 degrees below normal, and reached 16 degrees at its lowest, according to the National Weather Service.
Large winter kills of spot have been documented at least twice before, the MDE spokeswoman said, with about 15 million dying in early 1976 and a smaller number in 1980. Anyone wanting to report seeing dead fish can call 1-800-MDE-GOTO.

I’m thinking suicide.
Just your every day Fortean occurances.
I’m waiting for the rain of Frogs next.
Consider that come time to eat all they think is “oh no, fish again!”
Not many lifestyles that suck as much as being a fish that can’t tolerate cold water. Therapy bills must be enormous.
Please note - We have a major Arctic Blast coming after the weekend. Situation may escalate up another order of magnitude. Florida is supposed to be spared this next major cold blast, but water around Florida is already colder then normal. Texas and Louisiana are gonna get hit hard according to Accuweather forecasts.
My tributary off the Middle Bay (Balls Creek) has been frozen over for more than a month. It’s never stayed that way before in the 15 years we’ve been there. Blobal warming, indeed.
“The dead fish are primarily adult spot, with some juvenile croakers”
Sounds like they were all croakers.
Swamp gas caused by global warm-cooling.
Nothing to see here.
Mere coincidences, utterly unrelated.
Either get out of my head or start paying rent.
I blame Demi Moore, too. I had to sit through one of her horrible movies in the 1980’s because my girlfriend wanted to see it.
Thank you. I needed a laugh. I think I pulled something laughing.
How can this be, Maryland taxes my septic system $26.00 a year to clean up the bay? (sarc)
No it is Global cooling. We have reduced CO2 to low levels. This calls for emergency CO2 generation to make up for all the electric cars and windmills. I propose a vast program to produce millions of GTO’S and get them on the road to address the Cooling Crisis. Speed limits should be eliminated and Drag Racing between lights subsidized.
I live to serve...even if it’s only as the lowly court jester...or as a bad example....;]
[and “Lunatic Fringe” just started playing on VH1 Classics...talk about synchronicity]
Yes, I felt like I was being tortured for about 1 hour and 45 minutes (or so).
She, of course, thought it wasn’t that bad of a movie.
There is some comfort in the fact that the shopping mall, and the theater inside, have since been leveled. It eases the pain, if only slightly.
I hate to ask...which chick flick was it?
Me too and I’m a hundred and freaking 20 miles away from it.
Odds are nothing from *here* is making it to *there*.
Thank you. I needed a laugh. I think I pulled something laughing.
FR makes jokes... birds dropping from the sky... fish dying... all by tens if not hundreds of thousands... wake up... something is going on... and the lying fed say no worries... that is WHEN YOU WORRY MOST!
Could be... could be al qaeda and their biological program that missed... again... just saying.
Watching Demi Moore prance around naked in the kitchen in “About Last Night...” wasn’t so bad. Still have it on VHS but have yet to watch it with the sound on. That Bronx accent of hers - yuk.
She had boob enhancement done shortly afterward, IIRC.
Its a contrail, I tell ya. A contrail.
Mrs. Paul's Fish Stick ping.
” global warming “
Got it covered. All solutions same. = More Bigger Completer Totalification for Global Screwing.
Loving the juxtaposition of classic/modern verbal styles!
” Makes you wonder how this town got its name. “
I figured you were talking about: http://wikimapia.org/1343620/Blue-Ball-PA
Yes, locally they are warning Texas to get ARCTIC Blast next week.We had snow last year (Houston), maybe a blizzard this year?
The southerly march of the cold level might be beneficial.
Consider the palm tree, and Green Jays, and fire ants and Africanized bees..... all south loving species. They stop migrating northward somewhere in Texas.
If the cold continues south, perhaps the native Mexican human species will find it too cold north of the river and will quit coming.
Global cooling might save America
Yeah, Blue Ball’s not far from Intercourse, PA.
OOps..... left out the obvious.
Global Warming causes Mexican migration
Maryland was freezing last year at this time and I don’t remember a fish kill. Any other Marylander’s out there who remember one?
Yes those folks born in Roswell, New Mexico have very annoying Bronx accents.
The fish kill was probably all the cars using the Chesapeake Bay bridge to get to the football games. Therefore the football games and all non official vehicle traffic on the Bay bridge should be stopped to protect the fish. Just think of all the oil that drips out of the cars into the Bay also. There I diagnosed the problem for free, hundreds of miles away from the scene/s.
Yep, we never have cold winter water in the Chesapeake Bay, those fish sure must have been surprised
and when they die en masse in the summer, it’s due to “lack of oxygen”
I can remember when the bay was frozen solid ...and no massive fish kills
Fact is Tangier to the Bay Bridge is a BIG chunk of the Bay, will we ever get the honest word about WTF is going on
Maryland freezes every winter
Nothing extreme has happened
I remember in the 90s(?) a winter when the Bay was frozen solid and ice cutters had to keep the channel open to Baltimore but the fish didn’t die by the millions
And they're both just a few miles from Bird-In-Hand and Paradise.
