R. Lee Ermey and the hazards of hero worship
David Horowitz's NewsReal Blog ^ | January 5, 2010 | Kathy Shaidle

Posted on 01/05/2011 12:06:30 PM PST by HorowitzianConservative

Late last month, one viral video managed to awaken the internet during that comatose No Man's Land between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day.

The video showed actor R. Lee Ermey -- most famous as the real life U.S. Marine drill sergeant turned fictional one in the film Full Metal Jacket (1987) -- at a Toys 4 Tots fundraiser. In his inimitable fashion, Ermey loudly denounced President Obama's "socialism." The crowd more or less cheered, the rest of the dais blanched -- and a viral video was born.

According to liberal blogger John V. Moore of Windy City Watch, who originally uploaded the video to YouTube, it received close to half a million visits. It was emailed to me repeatedly by fellow conservatives and libertarians, and posted with effusive praise at numerous blogs (although, tellingly, not this one).

But I've been blogging for more than ten years, so my fairly well-honed sense of what bandwagons not to jump on told me to quietly steer clear of Ermey's admittedly stirring and entertaining rant.

He has already backed off and apologized. Too bad, didnt see anything wrong with it. Wish we didnt apologize all the time.

I'm not sure I understand - Ermey apologized for getting political at a non-political venue while he was representing a non-political entity.

As anyone with integrity would.

Opposed to the multitude of liberals who inflict their politics on perhaps non-appreciative audiences without a second thought.

Where's hero worship come into it?

He previously supported BO and took a lot of heat for it.

Olbermann called on his viewers to boycott Geico over Gunny. Luckily, Olbermann’s viewers can’t afford insurance in the first place, have nothing to insure, and can be counted on one hand.

While I agree with what he said, it really wasn’t the right venue for the rant, not very appropriate.

I agree. What Ermey did was good for cheap applause, but could not possibly help the effort to collect toys. And it certainly didn’t burnish his career prospects. He contributed nothing to the discourse other than his opinion.

It’s always a better quickly execute a plan well and say I’m sorry later than it is to wait for permission and get overrun while some PC wimp who isn’t in the fight decides your fate.

It may have been the “wrong venue”, but kind of like taking the wrong hill, at least that’s ground that we won’t have to take again. The viral video did it’s job. It exposed a socialist and opened some additional discussion about how dire our circumstances and where the Marines need to have their heads when it comes to protecting America.

Might as well. They already boycott the Marine Corps.

Since Olby can’t drive (some vision problem), I didn’t think he knew what auto insurance was.
