NPR Exec Resigns After Review of Williams Firing
NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE ^ | January 06, 2011 | Daniel Foster

Posted on 01/06/2011 4:14:48 PM PST by neverdem

Wow. NPR has concluded its internal review of the conditions surrounding the termination of commentator Juan Williams, and NPR’s news chief Ellen Weiss is out of a job. From an NPR release:

“— Williams’ contract was terminated in accordance with its terms.  The contract gave both parties the right to terminate on 30 days’ notice for any reason.  The facts gathered during the review revealed that the termination was not the result of special interest group or donor pressure.  However, because of concerns regarding the speed and handling of the termination process, the Board additionally recommended that certain actions be taken with regard to management involved in Williams’ contract termination.

“The Board has expressed confidence in Vivian Schiller’s leadership going forward.  She accepted responsibility as CEO and cooperated fully with the review process.  The Board, however, expressed concern over her role in the termination process and has voted that she will not receive a 2010 bonus.

“NPR also announced that Ellen Weiss, Senior Vice-President for News, has resigned.

” ‘We have taken this situation very seriously and the Board believes these recommendations and remedial steps address the concerns raised in connection with the termination of Williams’ contract,’ said Dave Edwards, Chair. ‘The Board regrets this incident’s impact on NPR and will work with NPR’s CEO, Vivian Schiller, to ensure that these actions will be expeditiously completed, examined, and monitored on an ongoing basis.’

More here.

UPDATE: NPR spokesman Anna Christopher tells Yahoo that “these are two distinct pieces of news.” I suppose that is ontologically true. But are we really meant to believe that the Weiss resignation isn’t related to the conclusion of the review? Weiss fired Williams, and in a release detailing the conclusions of an internal review into that event, in the course of describing disciplinary actions taken in light of it, Weiss’s resignation after nearly 30 years of employment is matter-of-factly announced.

Meanwhile, Juan Williams tells Fox News that Weiss was a symbol of the “very ingrown, incestuous culture” at NPR and that her departure is “good news for NPR and people who care about the news.”

Williams said allowing Weiss to resign stood as ”quite a contrast to how they treated me.”

Defund NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for starters. Ditto useless Headstart and DARE. It's not that much when compared to our debt, but it's a start.

Schiller should go, too. She set the tone, and allowed the politburo atmosphere at NPR to fester.

In a similar vein, we take NPR bias very seriously and believe remedial steps are needed to address such concerns. The American people are going to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

It’s not much compared to the debt but it removes some of the fascist left’s political footsoldiers from the public payroll. It’s a lot harder to agitate for communsim when your boss won’t give you a paid day off.

Republican House.

A desperate, racist, Marxist anti American National Pervert Radio foresees it's death by defunding, and grasps at straws.

Fired him
Called him crazy
In the middle of a fund raising effort

This gave management a direct and quantifiable gauge on what happened.

The clock started ticking for her the very next day after and it couldn’t have happened to nicer person.

It was only a matter of time.

Williams’ contract was terminated in accordance with its terms.

Then why was someone "fired" (resigned) in relation to Williams' firing? If it was all according to the contract, what's the to-do about? And if Schiller "accepts full responsibility", shouldn't she be the one to pay the price, whatever that is?

This is the High Priest of the NPR are offering a sacrifice to the Gods of the GOP hoping they will be saved...

NOT

Fools.... They will bring it up for a vote, it may not make it through the Senate, but it will expose them for 2013 when the House and Senate are the Tea Parties and they can get rid of this beast once and for all...

You can always count on NPR to figure something like this out, LONG after everyone else has. They should have known the firing of Williams was wrong the day they got the media backlash. Seriously.

Yes, a Weiss decision to get the Schiller out of NPR.

Obviously after 30 years Ellen Weiss left to pursue other interests.

I hear Putin is feeling her out to run Pravda.

They only did this because effective yesterday they did not want a good chunk of their tax payer funded money cut off.

They want to avoid Congressional scrutiny, which would take the form of hearings and testimony. There are more important fights right now, and alas I don’t think it’s possible to win the PR fight. ONCE THE PUBBIES HAVE BOTH HOUSES, and maybe the White House, it’ll be time to outlaw gov’t funding for NPR and PBS (and the “art organizations” around the country), either directly (redistribution of income) or indirectly (tax deductions).
