Ex-astronaut Schmitt gets energy post (NM-global warming denier!)
Santa Fe New Mexican ^ | January 6, 2011 | Barry Massey/ AP

Posted on 01/06/2011 6:03:36 PM PST by CedarDave

Former astronaut Harrison Schmitt, who walked on the moon and served in the U.S. Senate, was nominated Thursday by Gov. Susana Martinez to run a state agency that oversees energy production in New Mexico.

Schmitt was selected as cabinet secretary of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department. Schmitt, 75, was one of the last men to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. He won election to the Senate in 1976, but lost his re-election bid in 1982 to Democrat Jeff Bingaman, who remains in the Senate.

Martinez said the Schmitt's task is to make sure "we are developing the resources responsibly without killing jobs."

Schmitt said New Mexico has been "ill served" by regulations during the Richardson administration, contending that jobs in the energy industry have moved to other states.

The libs in NM are going apoplectic over his appointment. In addition to his stance on global warming (he resigned from The Planetary Society in 2008 saying "the 'global warming scare' is being used as a political tool to increase government control over American lives, incomes and decision making."), he is in favor of increased natural resource development including mining and oil and gas drilling, which is anathema to the environmentalists who have been in charge of state government natural resource agencies since Richardson arrived in 2002.

Here is the statement by the NM Democratic Party:

Martinez nominates global warming denier Schmitt to head state Energy and Minerals department
Submitted by J. Dyrcz on 6 January 2011 - 2:35pm

For Immediate Release Contact: Scott Forrester

January 6, 2011 505-934-5681

(ALBUQUERQUE) – In a clear sign that polluters in New Mexico will have free reign under her administration, Gov. Susana Martinez today nominated global warming denier and former astronaut Harrison "Jack" Schmitt to head the state’s Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department.

On many occasions, Schmitt has scoffed at decades of sound scientific evidence and a mountain of research that validated the human causes of global climate change.

In one instance he told Fox News that the "CO2 scare is a red herring", that the "global warming scare is being used as a political tool to increase government control over American lives, incomes and decision-making."

“Martinez promised bold change and she’s bringing it in the form of an appointee at odds with the basic tenets of science and reason,” said DPNM Executive Director Scott Forrester. “This appointment is a clear signal to Martinez’s big-oil backers that the days of basic protections for New Mexicans’ air and drinking water are over.”

Martinez also recently fired the entire Environmental Improvement Board, paving the way for industrial polluters to have their way with New Mexico’s precious natural resources.

“Martinez has never said one word about how important it is to have clean air and water in our beautiful state and instead has spent her short time in office ripping down basic environmental protections for our citizens,” Forrester said. “These moves are either straight payback for her contributors or a blatant disregard for the importance of clean air and water – not only for the lives of New Mexicans, but for future economic development.” #####

Schmitt on the record (Schmitt damnation quotations from the NM Rat party)

He has said that "the CO2 scare is a red herring."[Is Global Warming Real? Climate debate heats up", [Fox Business Network interview by Stuart Varney, 22 December 2009]

"global warming scare is being used as a political tool to increase government control over American lives, incomes and decision-making," Schmitt said. [Ex-Astronaut: Global Warming Is Bunk, AP, 2/16/09]

Of the global warming debate, he said: "It's one of the few times you've seen a sizable portion of scientists who ought to be objective take a political position and it's coloring their objectivity." [Ex-Astronaut: Global Warming Is Bunk, AP, 2/16/09]

“I don’t think the human effect is significant compared to the natural effect,” said Schmitt [Former astronaut Harrison Schmitt calls global warming a 'political tool', by Tony Hake, 2/16/09]

“Contrary to categorical statements by many politicians and unfortunately some scientists, including some colleagues of mine, the science of climate change and its causes is not settled - at least not to this geologist,” said Shimitt [Astronaut Harrison Schmitt: Climate change alarmists 'intentionally mislead', by Tony Hake, 3/1/09]

Schmitt said, “No definitive evidence therefore exists to support the hypothesis that the industrial revolution has driven carbon dioxide levels up more rapidly than otherwise expected as a response to long term temperature increases. No evidence likewise exists AGAINST the conclusion that variations in solar heating remain the overwhelming dominate driver of climate change and weather.” [Astronaut Harrison Schmitt: Climate change alarmists 'intentionally mislead', by Tony Hake, 3/1/09]

Schmitt is 75 years old and probably a good interim secretary for the start of Martinez’ term. He was also US Senator until he was defeated by current US Senator Bingaman in 1982. He has been a university professor and consultant since then.

As an aside, when I was in college between my junior and senior years we took a six-week field geology course in SE Arizona. Following completion of that course, we were offered jobs with the Apollo space program for the remainder of the summer at the USGS astrogeology branch in Flagstaff. We spent it testing geological observation and collection methods in and around the volcanic craters near Flagstaff and the big meteor crater outside Winslow. The only astronaut we got to meet was Schmitt who we found to be very focused and disciplined in his job, and whose hard work resulted in his being chosen to walk on the moon.

I remember when one of the lib networks did a puff piece on Glenn’s Senate retirement in 1999. One reporter went to Fred Thompson to get a feel-good soundbyte on his colleague. Thompson told said reporter that what he had to say about Glenn couldn’t be aired on a family network.

I met Harrison Schmidt when I was a boy and he was a Senator. I have met a few politicians in my life, but no one like him. When he was in a room, he didn’t seek the limelight. He was a bit on the shy side and was fine if he wasn’t the center of conversation. I thought it was a bit strange at the time, but I later realized it was a mark of good character.

“Jack” Schmitt is one of the finest straight arrows I have ever known. He was my Senator and a friend.

And he is exceedingly well qualified to serve in the post. He is a Geologist and was the only “civilian” to walk on the moon.

An excellent pick.

There are two approaches to these things.

The left truly does not care about anything but power and control, so the only schemes they will countenance lead to these things. Everything else must be prevented, in their lights.

A realistic approach is that people need energy, efficiently, which means an equation involving economics, science, efficiency and what produces more energy at lower cost. If whatever it is can do this, then it is realistic. No need for government at all. At all. The market will handle it.

He is from a fine family, his father was a very successful mining engineer.

His mother and my wife were very good friends from church there in Silver City, NM. My wife and I both worked in his campaign when he ran for re-election (he lost to Commie Jeff Bingaman). Later I was Republican County Chairman there, we lived in NM for 14 years.

Lefties still control most of NM, but there are some fine Republicans there too.

Everybody now, all together:

The Milankovitch Glaciation Cycle

It is the ultimate lib gob stopper. Astronomers and Physicists have relied upon the model for decades. Archaeologists know it. Paleontologists know it. Paleoclimatologists know it. The only people who don't know it are environmentalists of the liberal persuasion.

The "it" is that in it's cyclical travels around the sun, Earth's orbital shape changes, axial tilt changes, and polar precession changes. These multi-millenial cycles govern how much solar radiation reaches Earth, and where.

As a space program history buff, I must correct you. Jack may have been the only moon walker never to have served in the military, but Neil Armstrong was a civilian test pilot when he walked on the moon, and may have been when he was selected as on of the “next nine” in the autumn of 1962. Others can tell us who else was not an active duty military man when they transferred to NASA.

"Martinez has never said one word about how important it is to have clean air and water in our beautiful state and instead has spent her short time in office ripping down basic environmental protections for our citizens," Forrester said.

As usual the climate change people are so divorced from reality that they must blatantly lie about what they are proposing. If they got their way, energy would be so expensive that people would have to tear down forests to survive (think Haiti). So instead they point to the tiny bit of other pollution from the energy industry itself as if that matters.

Slayton had the attitude, from the start, that a spaceflight was owed to him. His sheer wonderfulness entitled him. However, flying in space requires perfect health because of the risks to a mission if any health problems show up during launch, flight, etc.

So he was nasty beyond belief to the flight surgeon personnel, because their findings and judgements got in the way of his lust to fly. Finally he went up on the Soyuz hookup, but was unspeakably arrogant about the delay he had to "endure" to pass the physical.

I was kind of a fly on the wall. Schmitt, frankly, was one of the few non-a$$holes among the astronaut corps. But he was a scientist.

Too much Hollywood.

Just my enraging opinion. lol.

Schmitt resigned from the Planetary Society, an organization formed by astronauts to give annual awards to each other. There are other astronauts on that society who tried to ride "global warming" to better speaking fee gigs. But Shmitt knew that the science was crap and quit. But you can see other big names on the list that were in on the hoax.
