SAN DIEGO A drunken wrong-way driver who caused the death of a sheriffs deputy who tried to stop him was sentenced Friday to seven years and eight months in prison, a term some of the deputys supporters said was too low.
Jose Pedro Lopez Jasso, 23, was charged in connection with the Feb. 28 death of Deputy Ken Collier. Eight months later, he pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and other charges related to the deputys crash in Santee.
Lopez also pleaded guilty to manufacturing a weapon a comb fashioned into a shank while in county jail. The weapon was found in his cell in March.
Dozens of the deputys supporters, including Sheriff Bill Gore and Deputy District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, filled one side of a large courtroom in San Diego Superior Court Friday to watch the sentencing hearing. On the other side of the room sat Lopezs friends and family.
