SAN DIEGO — A drunken wrong-way driver who caused the death of a sheriff’s deputy who tried to stop him was sentenced Friday to seven years and eight months in prison, a term some of the deputy’s supporters said was too low.

Jose Pedro Lopez Jasso, 23, was charged in connection with the Feb. 28 death of Deputy Ken Collier. Eight months later, he pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and other charges related to the deputy’s crash in Santee.

Lopez also pleaded guilty to manufacturing a weapon — a comb fashioned into a shank — while in county jail. The weapon was found in his cell in March.

Dozens of the deputy’s supporters, including Sheriff Bill Gore and Deputy District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, filled one side of a large courtroom in San Diego Superior Court Friday to watch the sentencing hearing. On the other side of the room sat Lopez’s friends and family.

That prison term should have been doubled because he was also an illegal alien. A few years ago an illegal alien ran a stop sign t-boned a school bus in Minnesota killing three kids. She got 18 years for manslaughter...though that was probably not half enough.

Yet when a Drunk Cop kills 2 people while having 2x the legal limit of alchohol in his blood, he walks without punishment.

“The 36-year-old officer was charged with drunken driving and reckless homicide after his SUV broadsided a car on Thanksgiving 2007.

She said that while the family believes prosecutors did everything they could, it was not enough to overcome what they believe was a case of Ardelean’s fellow officers covering up for him.

“(We’re) angry with the government, the police department who covered for each other,” she said, stuffing her shaking hands into her pants pockets. “We all sat in that room and saw them lie through their teeth.””

“All charges dropped against cop in fatal crash”
