Nothing online yet. Keith Olbermann on MSNBC, just before the news conference started, read a statement from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor that the House of Representatives was postponing all legislative business next week.
A new schedule will be announced on Sunday. Presumably, the vote to repeal Obamacare will be put off from the planned January 12 date.
For doing the right thing... nothing.
BINGO. The REAL reason for the one week delay: the other 434 house members need time to reassess and upgrade their security arrangements.
Sounds to me that they may be looking at beefing up security at the Capitol. Maybe the members are afraid to appear in public for the time being. Certainly don’t want any “birthers” getting into the gallery again.
This hiatus for next week is not just a showing of respect for the fallen congresswoman, it is out of pure fear. 82 new members were just seated and now they see one of their own nearly assassinated. Don’t you think that puts the fear of hell in their veins? The SS and the FBI are having to put in extra shifts for their protection. This takes time. Speaker Boehner is doing the right thing. If one more congressman takes a hit it will be on his shoulders for not being prudent. Don’t think the ‘Rats would be him over the head with it, you know it.

Something bad is going to come out of the aftermath of what happened today, and it's going to land on OUR heads.

If the troop or commander is killed in battle..does the unit..stop fighting..does it send a message..asking for a truce lasting 7 days..
If Congress takes a recess resulting from the tragic event today it is a sign of weakness.
“U.S. House of Representatives Postpones All Legislative Business Next Week.
Why?
The house didn’t suspend business during the Civil War, WW I, WW II, the Korean War or Viet-Nam.
I just cannot believe this. This country is not being run by strong adults.
Yes it is a terrible thing that happened to ONE congressperson.
Are we going to shut down Congress a whole damn week every time something terrible happens to a congressperson?
Good grief. It’s like they were waiting for some excuse. There is NO REASON to shut the Congress down an entire week because ONE congressman gets shot.
this is knee jerk, melodramatic, metrosexual behavior. Real adults that used to run the congress would mention it, have a moment of silence, and then, say that IN HONOR of the congressperson, Congress WILL CONTINUE ON and do the business they need to get done.
Adults deal with problems and move on. They do not cave in and shut down a whole week. This is friggin ridiculous.
The best tribute to this member of Congress is to continue on with the work of the people and to show that a kook cannot shutdown the workings of government for a week. And besides, no one member of Congress is bigger than the institution itself. People might not want to talk about it right now but sooner or later the issue needs to be addressed, what if this member cannot continue on with her duties, will she be replaced by someone chosen by the governor, is a special election held, etc? I could just see a Republican governor selecting a Democrat to serve out the term to show “compassion” (although she sounds like somewhat of a conservative anyway and a Republican would quite possibly be closer to her philosopically). If a President is involved in a situation like this there is a line of succession and these decisions have to be made instantly without too much thought for “appearances” so should it be that much different for a member of Congress? However Republicans handle this they are going to be painted as “heartless” and “opportunists” (unlike Democrats, who we all know would never use something like this for political advantage) so they need to just do what has to be done and not worry about appearances. And don’t kid yourself, even though it’s unspoken (and seen as unseemly) for now, succession is on the minds of a lot of people because it is certainly a possibility that a replacement will be necessary.
For doing the right thing... nothing.
A WEEK? No. How about a moment of silence for the dead and a prayer for them and the survivors? A WEEK?
That’s some serious avoidance.
How long for a broken arm? The flu?
The JACKASS party will turn this incident into another Wellstone moment, yet some here would turn a blind eye to their turning every tradegy into a political opportunity.
Befor you try to tell us that politics weren’t involved, how many DUmocrats uttered “Never let a good crisis go to waste” recently???
“The best rebuke to anarchy and savagery is calm resolve.”
I agree. If this act has the effect of shutting down the business of the congress, then it has become an effective tool of terror. We must not let this sort of thing stop the work of congress.
Of course, congress should show respect for their injuried colleage, but shutting down business isn’t the way to do it.
With as slow as everything moves on the hill you think a one week delay because a rep got shot is “unnecessary”? I think you are melodramatic and unnecessary.
what a bunch of idiots, get back to work or get out.
Apples and oranges. Would you compare a Navy SEAL team under fire to those incompetent boobs in washington?
I sure wouldn't.
