Focus Turns To Arizona's Gun Laws (LAT Features Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik's Anti RTC Rant Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 01/10/2010 | Molly Hennessy-Fiske

Arizona has some of the weakest gun control laws in the nation. To gun owners, those laws — which allow them to carry guns in their cars, in restaurants and other public places — are their last defense against unexpected evil. Gun control activists say the state's laws put weapons into the hands of the mentally unstable, and demand that federal officials impose tougher background checks and reinstate a ban on assault weapons.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik said the state's gun laws contributed to the shooting. He singled out the law passed last year that allows those 21 and over to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.

"We're the Tombstone of the United States of America," Dupnik said, referring to the Arizona town known for its gun-slinging past. "I have never been a proponent of letting everybody in the state carry weapons wherever they are. That's almost where we are."

He mentioned a proposed law that would allow college students to carry concealed guns on campus.

"That's the ridiculous state to where we have become," Dupnik said.

It's not AZ's RTC law that led to the Tucson massacre. It's that no citizen used their gun to stop Jared Loughner cold. If anything, every one needs to have the RTC to protect their persons and property - no matter how much the Los Angeles Times disapproves of it.

It was a gathering of Democrats... who are scared of those loud gun things.

Loughner didn’t need a CCW. In AZ, you can carry without a permit just like in VT and AK.

“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Just in case anyone forgot what the Second Amendment says.

No, but I doubt that distinction is responsible for his obvious mental illness.

Agreed. You can abuse a right like he did but that’s no justification for disarming every one else. And Dupnik is an ass - he doesn’t appear to know much about the gun laws of his own state. AZ is not exactly a Wild West shooting gallery, no matter how much the MSM wants to paint that picture.

This Clarence Duprik certainly is one. He needs to be retired.

I won't criticize any armed AZ citizen who did not draw in that crowded chaos Saturday.

I'm not a firearm owner but this must not be turned into a gun-grabbing opportunity. Arizona does not need to become like CA.

It won’t. There’s nothing wrong with AZ’s gun laws that need fixing - except giving college students the same RTC rights as all other Arizonans.

Gee, Loughner seems to have lied when he checked some of the answers on his 4473.

That was entirely truthful at the time.

We can’t guess what people will do. In a free society, you always take a risk that a person will decide to harm others. Nothing can be done about it, unless we want to take away everyone’s freedoms.

New York City has had the Sullivan Act since 1911. That certainly has done a lot to reduce murders and eliminate guns in 90 years. NOT!

A number of NYC gangs would/can still make a somewhat effective gun from a cap pistol. I will refrain from describing how, at this time. Are we to ban cap pistols?

BTW, NYC used to offer (I don’t know if it is still being done a 10 cent bounty for dead rats. I guess you were supposed to convince them to surrender and then beat them to death./s

They already have too many laws on the book but the one I found interesting in this case for Arizona. This is why the sheriff is rightfully lawyered up. He made previous threats and was advised to seek mental help.

13-3101. Definitions

7. “Prohibited possessor” means any person:

(a) Who has been found to constitute a danger to himself or to others or to be persistently or acutely disabled or gravely disabled pursuant to court order under section 36-540, and whose right to possess a firearm has not been restored pursuant to section 13-925.

OK, this was predictable. Shooter turns out to be a leftist. Lefties change mantra to "gun control".

FAIL.

Seems like the Sheriff is to blame here and was derelict in his duty by letting the lefty Psycho have a gun in the first place.

No, AZ has Constitutional Carry. As some have already pointed out, that's the price we pay to live in a free society.

Beats the alternative.

Rep Giffords was a staunch supporter of 2A. That point should be made again and again.

The Sherrif is responsible for failure. Like a good Dem he goes on the attack, instead of addressing the failure.

Question: Was he ever requested to provide security for Giffords public meetings? Is there a straight yes or no answer ?

What about it Dupnik???
