Ashley Turton, the wife of an Obama official and a lobbist, was found dead this morning in a burning car parked in her garage.

The bizarre death has D.C. wondering what happened to Turton. Authorities said her death appears to have resulted from "a low-speed crash, an unknown medical condition, the fire, or some combination of the three," the Washington Post reported.

Turton, who was 37, lived a full life. Surge Desk rounds up what we know about her so far.

1. She was one-half of a power couple Turton was married to Dan Turton, the White House's deputy director of legislative affairs for the U.S. House.Last year, Politco included them in a piece on White House aides who are married to lobbyists. The two were well-known in Democratic circles.

2. She used to work for Congress Before becoming a lobbyist, Turton served as chief of staff to Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Democrat from Connecticut. She also spent time as an aide to Rep. Richard Gephardt.

3. She lobbied for Progress Energy After leaving the Hill, Turton began working in 2007 as a regulatory analyst for Progress Energy, a North Carolina-based utility company. Progress Energy is also in the news today because of a possible $13.7 billion merger with Duke Energy.

4. She was a family woman The Turtons have three children, as this picture from her Facebook page shows. According to neighbors, the children are all under 5 years old. The couple purchased the home in Southeast D.C. for $826,000 in 2003.

5. She will be missed by many in D.C. As news of Turton's death spread today, Powerhouse Energy issued a statement offering condolences, and friends and old co-workers took to Twitter to share their sorrow.

Turton, who was 37, lived a full life.

This is the kind of thing you say about someone when they die at 87, not 37.

I doubt her children or her husband would agree that she lived a full life by this point.

Obvious? Preposterous! I think that it’s obvious that the vitriol is out of control and Palin and Fox News caused this to happen. I demand an investigation to see if Palin has ever purchased gasoline and if any Fox News correspondent has ever been to D.C.

Ahem...do I need to post the sarcasm tags? Oh, and...Bush’s fault!

How does pulling into or out of your garage and hitting something cause your car to burst into flames? I mean the most anyone would expect to happen would be something along the lines of having to take the car to the body shop, and fixing or replacing whatever the heck it was you ran into.

This stinks.

This was just announced:

Duke Energy and Progress Energy to Merge

- $26 Billion Transaction Will Create Nation’s Largest Utility with a Combined Enterprise Value of $65 Billion
- Diversified Generation Portfolio in Six Regulated Service Territories
- Transaction Expected to be Accretive to Adjusted Diluted Earnings in First Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. and RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) and Progress Energy, Inc. (NYSE: PGN) announced today that both companies’ boards of directors have unanimously approved a definitive merger agreement to combine the two companies in a stock-for-stock transaction. The combined company, to be called Duke Energy, will be the country’s largest utility, with:

* Approximately $65 billion in enterprise value and $37 billion in market capitalization
* The country’s largest regulated customer base, providing service to approximately 7.1 million electric customers in six regulated service territories North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio
* Approximately 57 gigawatts of domestic generating capacity from a diversified mix of coal, nuclear, natural gas, oil and renewable resources
* The largest regulated nuclear fleet in the country.

“Our industry is entering a building phase where we must invest in an array of new technologies to reduce our environmental footprints and become more efficient,” said Jim Rogers, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Duke Energy. “By merging our companies, we can do that more economically for our customers, improve shareholder value and continue to grow.

“Combining Duke Energy and Progress Energy creates a utility with greater financial strength and enhanced ability to meet our challenges head-on,” Rogers continued.

“This combination of two outstanding companies is a natural fit,” said Bill Johnson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Progress Energy. “It makes clear strategic sense and creates exceptional value for our shareholders. Together, we can leverage our best practices to achieve even higher levels of safety, operational excellence and customer satisfaction, and save money for customers by combining our fuel purchasing power and the dispatch of our generating plants.

“This merger also provides predictable earnings and cash flows to support our dividend payments to shareholders,” Johnson added.

Maybe she was on her way to Fort Marcy Park?

Ironic that Progress was bought out by Duke today...frankly, more than ironic.

The implication seems to be that her family was home and she left the house before dawn in her vehicle, got into a slow-speed crash and the fire was noticed and called in by a neighbor.
