judge has ordered U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to serve three years in prison for his role in a scheme to illegally funnel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002.
The sentence comes after a jury in November convicted DeLay on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. DeLay was once one of the most powerful men in U.S. politics, ascending to the No. 2 job in the House of Representatives.
The former Houston-area congressman had faced up to life in prison. His attorneys asked for probation.

Will Delay remain free until the TX Court of Criminal Appeals overturns this injustice?
Yes DeLay has posted a $10,000 and will out while the appeals process is ongoing.
will out

will remain out
Ex-House leader DeLay gets 3-year prison term
I see that. The headline was 5-years a bit ago. Thanks for giving me the heads up.
De Lay was convicted by an Austin jury. And the law he was convicted of did not go into effect until after the actions in question.
So it's an ex post facto conviction, in violation of the U.S. Constitution. And Austin is a hotbed of Marxist/Fascists/Demonrats. Even then, five Austin grand juries refused to indict on the charges. So, yeah, there's a problem with this prosecutor, judge, and jury.
The law was defective and the jurors were selective.
Well, now it’s official. Soviet Union show trials and kangaroo courts have reached our shores. All you need is a liberal prosecutor in a liberal county and you can take down any conservative in the country.
Are you suggesting the Texas jurors are stupid and or corrupt?
What Delay did was legal under the campaign finance laws in place at the time. The proscecutrs twisted the money laundering statutes to create the appearance of illegality. The Texas jurors smelled a rat and attempted to ask questions of the judge in terms of what the statutes actually mean and how they should be applied. The judge refused to answer the questions and instructed the jurors to work with what they have been given. So essentially the jurors did what they were instructed to do. It will take a higher legal authority to determine that the instructions were invalid.

the jurors did what they were instructed to do
They were instructed to vote guilty?
What an odd response....
Bill Clinton received illegal campaign contributions for the Chinese and allowed campaign contributors to sell missile technology to the Chinese.
It will not stand he’ll appeal it and it will be thrown out.
Count on it!

After the sentencing, DeLay was immediately taken into custody for processing. But the judge granted a request that he be released on a $10,000 bond pending appeal.
Prosecutors say it could mean he'll be free for months or even years as his appeal makes its way through the court system.
His lawyer says he expects the conviction to be overturned.
Yes and Yes. The jury was seated in Austin, the most liberal city in the state by far. It's right up there with San Francisco.
Yes and Yes.
Hmmm
The other guy up thread claimed the jurors were denied information by the judge and basically had no choice but to vote guilty.
Boy, we've never heard this one before....
That is just like what the corrupt New Jersey judge did to fix the trial of the Colorado citizen who moved to New Jersey with his guns, and was therfore sentenced to 7 years in prison! The jury repeatedly asked for the statutory exceptions, but the arrogant judge directed a verdict of guilty, in effect! STENCH FROM THE BENCH!
Yep!
Scary stuff going on down in Texas....
>>Meanwhile, Charlie Rangel, Maxine Waters, and William Jefferson are laughing all the way to the bank.
And Clinton (both of them) and Dirty Harry, and....Obama and the tax evaders (Geithner, et al)
And what about that list of tax evaders in the Swiss bank accounts.....probably dems
Thanks.
