Gun control: It's not a political impossibility (WashCompost Masthead Editorial)
Washington Post ^ | 01/10/2011 | Washington Post Masthead Editorial

As a candidate for president, Sen. Barack Obama nonetheless pledged to revive the assault-weapons ban. These weapons serve no conceivable lawful purpose. Mayors and police chiefs, whose constituencies pay the bloodiest price for traffic in such guns, have pleaded for sensible laws. In Mexico, where assault weapons purchased in the United States have been responsible for tens of thousands of murders, Mr. Obama's counterpart, Felipé Calderon, has lodged similar requests. But President Obama has taken only minor steps toward redeeming Candidate Obama's promise.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a nonprofit organization that advocates for gun control, noted that in the recent midterm elections, 27 Democratic incumbents endorsed by the NRA lost reelection. By contrast, only two of the 101 Democratic representatives who co-sponsored a gun-control bill in the last Congress lost their seats. Support for sensible gun control need not spell the end of a career. If Mr. Obama would lead the way in making the argument, poll numbers on the issue also might begin to shift.

And the argument would be this: Sensible regulations could save lives. Maybe little can be done to prevent a deranged individual from doing harm to others. But there are steps that could limit the harm he can do.

The logic is if the rest of us are disarmed, the bad guys can't kill. It sounds good except in the WashCompost's own bailiwick, DC, the murder rate is the nation's highest, thanks to the government forbidding its citizens from defending themselves with guns. Good thing they didn't bring it up since they know there is no rational (or sensible political) argument for gun control. None whatsoever.

Last I heard, gun control was a huge success in Chicago, too...

I can’t think of a single law that would have stopped this lunatic.

Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

The Washington Post is a “political impossibility.”

If laws could stop evil people there would be no need for any one to be armed. I’d like liberals to try reasoning with a sociopath. Like appeals to the law, conscience or morality will have an effect on those types of people.

I can. The state statutes that prohibit the government from incarcerating mentally ill people until they can be proved to be no danger to self or society...

The term for this is “blood dancing”. The anti-gunners do it every time.

Liberals have set dangerous people loose on society and they have the chutzpah to condemn us for the effects of their ill-conceived social experimentation. That really takes the prize for hitting below the belt!

The attack by the left on the 1st amendment is being beaten back. They just switch over to the 2nd amendment to try and save face. The real target is the constitution.

They’ve proven they could care less about the Constitution if it presents an impediment to controlling us. The past few days has unmasked them for all to see.

The only solution the left knows :

EVERY situation is used to try and expand the government, raise taxes and remove rights.

When a conservative dies our freedoms are expanded.

When a liberal dies they are reduced.

BINGO! The Liberals created this driftless, traditionless society where anything and everything goes. That kid is the perfect example of a person with no base. No culture. No tradition. He was seeking that base in kooky rituals, gothic junk and counter-culture goofyness. The perfect Liberal life. Untethered to anything from the past. The Cultural Revolution could not have been nastier...

Criminal shooters would have far less victims if more average citizens owned & carried guns as they would quickly bring the assassin to a halt. I think the anti-gun folks actually know all this & are simply betraying themselves for the pro genocide advocates that they are because an un-armed population dovetails perfectly with their eugenicist / population control agenda. The anti-guners are really only against the average slave from having a gun to defend himself from the Loughners of the world. This is an undeniable fact.

If guns are responsible for violence, then we should let this shooter go and put the gun on trial.

It could be worse. The Giffords shooting could have happened when the Dems controlled both houses of Congress.

“These weapons serve no conceivable lawful purpose.”

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I believe the Second Amendment is a law, and that these weapons can be used to fight tyrants with similar weapons.

Expect to see Josh Sugarmann and Tom Diaz of the Violence Policy Center come crawling out from under their rocks. I’m surprised they haven’t already appeared.

Fourteen million new gun sales in 2009 should be an obvious indicator of the nation’s mood regarding firearms. Ammunition sales were off the charts too. The Compost is clueless.
