Gun control: It's not a political impossibility (WashCompost Masthead Editorial)
Washington Post ^ | 01/10/2011 | Washington Post Masthead Editorial

As a candidate for president, Sen. Barack Obama nonetheless pledged to revive the assault-weapons ban. These weapons serve no conceivable lawful purpose. Mayors and police chiefs, whose constituencies pay the bloodiest price for traffic in such guns, have pleaded for sensible laws. In Mexico, where assault weapons purchased in the United States have been responsible for tens of thousands of murders, Mr. Obama's counterpart, Felipé Calderon, has lodged similar requests. But President Obama has taken only minor steps toward redeeming Candidate Obama's promise.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a nonprofit organization that advocates for gun control, noted that in the recent midterm elections, 27 Democratic incumbents endorsed by the NRA lost reelection. By contrast, only two of the 101 Democratic representatives who co-sponsored a gun-control bill in the last Congress lost their seats. Support for sensible gun control need not spell the end of a career. If Mr. Obama would lead the way in making the argument, poll numbers on the issue also might begin to shift.

And the argument would be this: Sensible regulations could save lives. Maybe little can be done to prevent a deranged individual from doing harm to others. But there are steps that could limit the harm he can do.

Liberals have set dangerous people loose on society and they have the chutzpah to condemn us for the effects of their ill-conceived social experimentation. That really takes the prize for hitting below the belt!

This is one of the clearest cause and effect cases of wrong-headed liberal policy. But they will never admit it and will fight tooth and nail to prevent reform.

Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

That's a great way of putting it.

Of course they’re for gun control...they probably have armed guards & metal detectors in their building. Who cares about the regular folk?

There will be a civil war if the left really tries to push this. I won’t be the one starting it.

“In Mexico, where assault weapons purchased in the United States have been responsible for tens of thousands of murders”

—no, ill-informed, lying propagandist ComPost...the main weapons used to kill in Mexico are Mexican Army issue.

The lies and deceit of the MSM is a continual drumbeat of repeating a story enough times to make it fact.

Dummies believe that and they are Leftists with no idea of anything but Communist Utopian garbage.

Gun control: It's not a political impossibility

. If they want to fight us on the second amendment, we should oblige them as we are actually positioned well for such a fight (thank you NRA). It will make taking the Senate that much easier for us. The gun Control issue has always been their Achilles heel.

I say let them try. It can only help us.

Gun control is a losing issue, and although this circumstance is a little different from Columbine and Virginia Tech since a member of Congress was involved, I'd give anyone a hundred to one odds that this push for gun bans will end up like all the others.

They'll pass some additional legislation that will provide some extra protection for politicians at the federal level. That will be all.

I do feel like the right took the defensive too early on this. Now all of the right wing media personalities look guilty to the uneducated masses, without taking into account all of the names Pelosi, Reid, and their ilk have called their political opponents.

[In Mexico, where assault weapons purchased in the United States have been responsible for tens of thousands of murders,...]

Ain’t it amazing how that lie becomes a bonafide fact in this article? “Settled” by honest research, I’m sure.

I can’t think of a single law that would have stopped this lunatic. Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

Good point. The supreme and over arching law against murder surely did not stop our boy.

These weapons serve no conceivable lawful purpose.

Except to repel invaders to our homeland.

(I hear that a LOT of that is taking place on our southern border.

But we needn't worry; for we have HOMELAND Security to protect us.)

The lies from the fascists at the WP just keep coming.

I want to see the house cancel all subscriptions to the WP paid for by federal funds. This rag goes to federal bureaucrats. Killing the subscriptions will destroy the Marxist WP.

The logic is if the rest of us are disarmed, the bad guys can't kill. It sounds good except in the WashCompost's own bailiwick, DC, the murder rate is the nation's highest, thanks to the government forbidding its citizens from defending themselves with guns.

Last I heard, gun control was a huge success in Chicago, too...

Also a rousing success in DC's neighbor, Prince George's County in Maryland....nine murders since 1/1/2011.

The ignorance is beyond profound.

It isn't ignorance, it's a cynical ideology at work. Promoted by the kind of people who'd send 25,000,000 of us to death camps if they could swing it.

WaPo/JournoList perp Ezra Klein was on Charlie Rose last night. The guy is meta-creepy. When he talks, his eyes are just dead -- dead-fish eyes. The cat looks like a sociopath, a Terminator without the Cyberdyne chassis and peripherals.

When he got on-camera with Rose, he opened his mouth, and a the lies flew out like a swarm of flies, like some old zombie movie .... Sarah this, Sarah that, Tea Party this and that and the other.

You know, that's the best idea I've heard all year. We talk about "defunding the Left" -- but I never thought of that one. Congrats! You win the week in Bermuda! .... no more callers, please, we have a winner!

—this, from the garbage wrap which admitted, upon its original passage, that the “assault weapons” ban was but a “symbolic” gesture-—
