Before handcuffing herself to the White House fence, former Petty Officer First Class Autumn Sandeen carefully pinned three rows of Navy ribbons to her chest. Her regulation dress blue skirt, fitted jacket, hat and black pumps were new _ fitting for a woman who spent two decades serving her country as a man.
Sandeen was the only transgender person among the six veterans arrested in April while protesting the military's ban on openly gay troops. But when she watched President Barack Obama last month sign the hard-fought bill allowing for the ban's repeal, melancholy tinged her satisfaction.
"This is another bridesmaid moment for the transgender community," the 51-year-old San Diego resident said.
The "don't ask, don't tell" policy now heading toward history does not apply to transgender recruits, who are automatically disqualified as unfit for service. But the military's long-standing posture on gender-identity has not prevented transgender citizens from signing up before they come out, or from obtaining psychological counseling, hormones and routine health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs once they return to civilian life.
Former Air Force Sgt. Nicole Shounder, 52, who underwent sex reassignment surgery in 1999, has spent the last four years wearing a uniform at sea, first with the Coast Guard auxiliary and now, as a civil service mariner nurse aboard the USNS Robert E Perry, which recently supplied deployments in the Mediterranean.
Shounder considers it a privilege to wear Navy-issued collar brass and shoulder boards.
"Given my circumstances, it really is," she said. "Essentially until someone can say otherwise, I am probably the only out and open post-op transsexual in uniform for the Navy, or as close as you can be."

Why not just hand the current military over to them and organize a new military. The only requirement for service in the new military would be balls and brains.
Holy cr@p. You can’t make this s**t up.
Somebody please post the “Aw Jeez” guy.
I retire in 10 days. Vietnam vet if that matters.
Ready to toss my cookies (urrrrrrrppp).
We knew this was next in the volley of attacks on traditional values. They`ll eventually get what they want, too. The floodgates have been opened.
FTA: “This is another bridesmaid moment for the transgender community”
Who has the stones to tell these queers that it’s not PC to use the term “bridesmaid moment” because that is a gender specific term applied to the panoply of genders?
I think I'll join the Army....
When/if that happens it will probably be called the Confederate Army II.
And this is Reason #43298369 why I am so glad I am already retired from the military.
But congrats. Hope it is blue id card retired and not just terminal leave retired (easier to be recalled the latter way)
Somebody please post the Aw Jeez guy.
My CAC is good for a few more years but my MRD is age based so that’s it. May join the state militia.
The HQ where I’m pulling my last duty days is papered with posters that say real soldiers celebrate diversity, don’t do drugs, and do not harass their female counterparts.
I thought real soldiers kill people, break things, and accomplish the mission. How old fashioned of me.
By their own definition, these people are mentally disturbed. (by their own admission!) This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that many (most) of them use mental distress as the lever to get insurance or the government to pay for their perversion.
Ok, so now we have a person with a clear and documented history of mental disturbances and mental stress, who wants to be dropped into the most stressful situation a human can endure with access to mortars, machine guns, grenades, oh yeah, that makes perfect sense.
The statistics show that gay, homo, transwhatever, this that and the other, people are 3 times more likely to attempt or commit suicide. So that is who you want next to you in combat, a mentally disturbed suicidal person who is more than likely hormonal due to medication.
Hey ARMY, I'm a horse trapped in a man's body. I want you to pay for horse reconstruction surgery and then promote me to Master Sergeant. I deserve it because *I* am special. Love me! Need me! Want me! I am horse man.
The American Left is getting to the point where they are simply denying ‘reality’ and imposing some kind of fantasy land reality. Listen, I cannot lift 500lbs. I can't. It is just reality. And no amount of legislating that people must recognize that I can lift 5000lbs, no amount of wanting or thinking that I can lift 5000lbs is going to make that weight get off the ground. There is a real thing called ‘reality’. Reality is not whatever you want or 'wish' it to be.
Mentally disturbed men and women with mutilated genitalia need help. Putting them in life or death situations where their actions can get many more people killed is simply idiotic. After all, they have already proven by how they live their lives that their actions, perceptions, and decision making capability is compromised. And that is fine with me as long as they stay away from me, my friends, my brothers and sisters, and my sons and daughters. They need to stay in their little freak cage where they belong, take their meds, get their counseling, until they eventually kill themselves.
That's fine. But putting these freaks in charge of the lives of normal, corn-fed, God fearing, Americans is a definition of insanity. So, either the politicians are crazier than the freaks, or they have an intentional agenda to get troops killed, weaken the military, and just generally cause chaos during a time of war.
Just what the military needs
aging 50 yr old queens coming out of the closet to preen in new dress blues of the opposite sex
where is that “Ah Jeez” graphic?
The government should do something...I have voices in my head! (fortunately, they speak a foreign language so I have no idea what they are saying) I'm just a normal guy who wants to be complete. See? See? how normal I am? I'm just an average American who wants to be a horse. What could be more sane?
(BTW, many of my ex’s already call me horse man, but that's a different story...)
