Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), one of the few pro-gun control Republicans in the House, wants to make it illegal for someone to carry a gun within 1,000 feet of certain high-ranking federal officials, including members of Congress.

“It is imperative that we do all that we can to give law enforcement the tools they need to ensure the safety of New Yorkers and prevent an attack before it happens,” said King, who is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, during a press conference in New York.

When we elevate supposedly citizen legislators above regular citizen equivalency, we voluntarily subjugate ourselves to the whims and fancies of an elite that eventually come to think we are of much less worth than they are. Based on this, I'd say we're pretty much there.....

That would ban lawmakers from carrying weapons.

Yep. If we had this, we could have charged the AZ shooter with violation of this statute. That would have certainly made him think twice before killing.

Nothing like a knee-jerk reaction. Yes, make sure you tell the population where you are going to be 24/7. I would hate to be within 1000ft. of our overlords!

“How do you keep the politicians from moving too close?”

We could mount an aircraft warning strobe on their highest elevation, like on a hat, and then it would be up to the rest of us to keep the distance.

If they are around a corner, or otherwise out of line of sight, it would not be a penalty to be within the zone. If that is not acceptable we’ll need a siren or horn or some sort of annunciator, plus a runner to go ahead of them to warn us that one is coming.

Now, do we increase the radius if there are several politicians together? Like 2000 feet for two politicians, and 434,000 feet (82 miles) if the full house is in session?

And, in fairness, no government employee will be allowed to carry a gun within 1000 feet of a citizen.

“Does this apply to cops and secret service too??”

Of course not. It only applies to little people.

Bandwagon Effect.

King’s idea is as ridiculous as the Dem lawmaker who wants to ban crosshairs on Congresspersons’ images.

[How do these people keep getting elected?]

"That ceratinly would not be protected due to your medical records being private."

Really? Mental health isn't covered under HIPAA?

I wish he would explain why he thinks a criminal or psycho would obey this idiotic law?

“No guns in an opera house either.”

I think the DHS would handle that by only banning revolvers.

My new congressman meets with lots of people who are CHL holders. I think he and everyone around him would be less safe if this law were to pass.

Maybe if they stopped passing laws people don’t want and cramming them down people’s throat they wouldn’t have to worry about their safety.

Do the rest of us peons not deserve the same protection as them (not that I want their help)? Somehow they think they are special. They treat their constiuents with contempt and expect us to shut our mouths and take it. They know best! /s

if someone is not allowed to serve in the military due to psychological issues, shouldn’t that information be filed and then appear when someone attempts to legally purchase a firearm?

It was reported that his rejection was due to failing a drug test.

Logic tells me that you could ban guns 10 miles from congressmen or specific events, and it wouldn’t stop a deranged lunatic hell-bent on shooting someone. That’s like the protection orders issued against stalkers or abusers in relationships. If they’ve determined in their minds they’re going to follow through on their criminal acts/intent to stalk, injure or kill their victims, there’s no restraining order on earth that’s going to stop them.
