Mandatory Parent Meeting
Fox ^ | January 11, 2011 | Molly Line

A mandatory parent meeting called by Swampscott High School leaders in Massachusetts wrapped up last night with mixed reviews. Some parents felt school officials were too heavy-handed, threatening to punish kids if parents didn't show. Others believed the compulsory meeting was warranted given the challenges facing the community and teenagers regarding drug and alcohol abuse.

A letter sent out to parents and signed by Swampscott's new principal, Layne Millington, informed the recipients that "all parents or guardians must attend." If parents failed to show at the meeting or failed to make other arrangements to meet with the principal their kids would not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities.

But what about homeschool students and others that are not enrolled in the public school, yet attend some of the extra curricular activities?

Couldn't they just send home a note to be signed by the parents?

Homeschooling and private schools are the answer.

Here in MI, HS parents would get the same note.
If they did not attend, their children would not be in the ECAs.

Here in MA, we are all slaves of the state. We are all “just following orders”.

Parents should have signed up for the “other arrangements.” One parent comes in at 8, the next at 8:30, then 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, through the principal’s lunch hour, then continued through the afternoon, the next day, the next several days, the next several weeks, and on through until the end of the year. Of course, they could have stopped this by attending a school board meeting and calling for a mass firing of administrators. Parents have forgotten they have the final say in how the school is run.

The only kids who did more drugs than my public school friends...were my private school friends.

Parents have forgotten they have the final say in how the school is run.

Excellent point. They've also forgotten who is responsible for the education of their children.

HINT: it's not the state.

What does the principal have to say about drug or alcohol abuse “challenges” that couldn’t be accomplished by sending each family a copy of the brochures issued by the police department? Parents can’t or won’t read them? Oh, well ...

You are absolutely right. If the public schools didn’t have a monopoly, they wouldn’t be able to strong arm parents and all of our children would be better educated.

Their parents gave them more money...but in affluent public school districts there really isn’t any difference.

That just says more about the company you keep than it says anything about where any of your "friends" were schooled.

The way my husband and I have raised our children and evaluated their friends has infinitely more to do with their not drinking and taking drugs than all the health classes and DARE programs they ever sat through.

And many of their peers, who sat through those same classes, do get drunk at parties and take drugs. So I would be ticked at any principal who thought I needed to learn from the professionals.

My daughter just came back from college and told me she’d skipped a party because there was going to be pressure to do vodka shots. I thought, Yes! Thank you, God!

Of course the school administrators think all parents are blind with the “Not my darling” mindset. So that means my daughter must be a sneaky little thing.

Well I think I turned out quite all right, thank you very much.

The private school kids always had the best parties. Girls would be there.

Perhaps if the parents of Loughner had been required to communicate directly with the schools, something could have been done before it was too late. Something was wrong in that family for a long time. See link:

The kids were just born drug users.

Why are their civil rights being violated this way?

I don’t see why this requirement is unreasonable at all. There is a new policy affecting students who take part in extracurricular activities; parents are required to attend a session about the policy or else their kids can’t participate. Makes perfect sense to me—and my kid is homeschooled.

“Parents have forgotten they have the final say in how the school is run”.

...they haven’t forgotten. They’re scared of schools because of what they may do to their precious’ grade. Plus, the Dads are mostly metrosexual sissies that don’t want to “make waves”. The Moms are mostly liberals who like the control the school has so they can work, get manicures and just generally get the kids out of their hair.
