Will NASA's New 'Glory' Spacecraft Silence Climate-Change Deniers?
The Daily Galaxy News ^ | January 12, 2011 | If you find out, let us know

Posted on 01/12/2011 12:41:38 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Glory is a low Earth orbit scientific research satellite designed to collect data on the properties of aerosols, including black carbon, in the Earth's atmosphere and climate system, and to collect data on solar irradiance for the long-term effects on the Earth climate record. The new robotic probe is headed to the launch pad, aiming for a spot aboard what is called the A-train -- a fleet of Earth-orbiting spacecraft keeping tabs on the planet's changing climate.

Coming to a topline conclusion about the treality of global warming will be a snap: Glory will measure the total amount of energy coming to Earth from the sun, subtract what gets reflected back or re-radiated from particles in the atmosphere and see what you have left. If more energy is coming in than going out, it's getting hotter.

To calibrate just how much is human-created is more complicated: Figure out what fraction of these atmospheric particles stems from natural phenomena, such as wind-blown dust and volcanic eruptions, and what is coming from things we can control -- our industrial processes, business pursuits and recreational past-times.

NASA hopes to tackle the question with Glory: part-solar monitor, part-atmospheric probe, Glory will join the quartet of Earth-orbiting satellites known as the Afternoon Constellation -- nicknamed the A-train -- which fly over the equator at roughly 1:30 p.m. local time every day so scientists can collect data from a variety of instruments tracking the same bit of real estate virtually simultaneously. That information is fed into computer models used to monitor and forecast climate change.

From a stationary position 438 miles above Earth, Glory will inventory atmospheric aerosols -- both naturally occurring and human-induced -- so scientists can determine each type's relative influence on global climate. ........

Will NASA's New 'Glory' Spacecraft Silence Climate-Change Deniers?

I see a headline like that and know I'm being propagandized. No one wants to be a "denier" after all.

Those of us who have been around a few decades know, historically, "denier" is generally proceeded by "Holocaust" and such people are fringe, foolish, racist outcasts.

The scientific method and advancement requires questioning. This is how they treat those who are skeptics of the political and economic schemes built on global coolingglobal warming climate-change. It's almost like how the Church once treated Galileo.

While in the past some instruments were incorrect, when discovered, honest scientists would fix or replace them. Or find a way to correct for the error in their analyses.

This stopped when politics became involved and when AGW/C became a religion. There are no honest scientists at NASA now; they will take this impeccable data now and feed their same worthless models. And arrive at the answer their religion demands.

There are no climate-change deniers. There are anthropogenic global warming deniers. And even then, they're not denying any possibility of man having an effect on warming, they're denying the assertion, offered without evidence, that human activity is responsible for a change, not in evidence, that will, without immediately following the recommendations of the AGW proponents, inevitably result in the destruction of the ecosphere. The "deniers" are the reasonable and responsible party.

Actually I think that the Earth must radiate slightly more heat than it absorbs from the sun when you take into account the heat that is created inside the earth and must be radiated away. Also there are other heat sources which may be minor but need to be accounted for, because the equation is in a very fine balance considering the huge total amount of energy involved.

Frankly I think the difference they are trying to find is an order of magnitude smaller than the errors and assumptions that will go into the “fudge” factors.

In short, I think the answer will turn out to be, as is so often the case with these jokers, just what they want it to be.

I knew someone else would notice that. The author mentions that the satellite is going to join the A-train and then says it will be stationary. Doh!

The headline makes it seem there is already an agenda afoot.

Why can’t this spaceship silence Global Warning doomsayers?

It won't be stationary at that height...who did the research on this story? LOL!!!

What a threat hann? "Glory will measure the total amount of energy coming to Earth from the sun, subtract what gets reflected back or re-radiated from particles in the atmosphere and see what you have left. If more energy is coming in than going out, it's getting hotter." Nobody will say that if the same ammount goes out that comes in, Earth will be a frozen desert... Just like the Moon... Then, if it is set up that it might be more coming in, "Global Warming" is already proved, and we, the "Deniers" must shut up, and UN Climate take over the world governance. What a bunch of BS!

I do not think that dude made an A in Thermodynamics. The amount of energy radiated into space is roughly equal to the energy we receive plus the energy generated by the earth core from radiation. The reason it is not exactly equal is mostly due to photosynthesis. The energy of the sun drives photosynthesis and thus chemical reactions that store energy.

“Glory will measure the total amount of energy coming to Earth from the sun, subtract what gets reflected back or re-radiated from particles in the atmosphere and see what you have left. If more energy is coming in than going out, it’s getting hotter.”

Among other things, this assertion ignores reflection and re-radiation from the earth’s surface.

If more energy is coming in than going out, it's getting hotter.

It does not verify any such thing, all it does is suggest boundary limits on Earth's energy exchange from the sun, you have no historical reference to base these numbers on.

They'll probably put it into some computer models, that means their back to square one of the junk science equation.

That’s going to open a pandora’s box of issues

Just as they did with the "ozone hole" and AGW, they will discover something never seen before and find it "troubling".....

.....Within 2 years they will have some kook theory that purports to show the earth is doomed because of man, complete with faked proxy data trends going back to the time of the dinosaurs.

Then we will have congressional hearings and a new enviro-crusade will have been born.

To calibrate just how much is human-created is more complicated:

In fact, it's so complicated that we'll just skip this step, and begin by making stuff up.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.
